  • Royal Marines

I remember reading an article recently about the Royal Marines and how there was actually quite a large amount of Irish serving over there. So I was wondering what's so attractive about the Marines over our own army? Is it the training or the chance to see combat? Or even just the greater oppurtunity for travel etc?

I know it may seem like a bit of a naive or general question just want to guage people's opinion on this, particularly any Irish who may have served with RM and what made them choose this over the PDF.

well you could join the PDF and do a lot of cash escorts and barrack guards with the odd trip overseas; or you could join the RM and go to Afghanistan and kill people.

Being a bit of a Walt but that's how i see it, that is essentially the way it was portrayed in the recent TV documentary. Not in a gung-ho fashion, but the training staff really seemed professional, even if the TV show was a bit superficial.

It doesn't just apply to the Royal Marines but to all branches of the British Forces; particularly the Army where they even have Irish Regiments.

So, why indeed over the years have the Irish joined the British Forces instead of their own Irish Defence Forces?

I would put it down to Pay, Conditions, Promotion, Travel, Overseas Postings, Combat Experience, Training, Variety of Equipment and so on.

Compare the above between that of a Infantry Soldier in the Irish Army to that of the British Army or a Seaman or an Airman in the appropriate service branch.

The question then remains as to why people join the Irish Defence Forces instead of the British Forces and I guess it comes down to the fact that they prefer to serve in defence of their own country and not that of a foreign power.

Pretty much all of the above, but the same could be said for the british army as a whole. As it stands with their current commitments your pretty much guaranteed to be deployed to the middle east.

As someone heading down that route, yes there are quite a few Irish guys in it, from the Republic, having talked to 1 or 2 the general consensus was that there's far less "paddywhackery" BS in the Corps then in the BA especially some of the regiments..thats their opinion now not mine, plus the training is different in some respects to a "regular" infantry force, you can specialise in boat's/hovercraft ect you also get trained in some skill's as a GD Commando that regular soldiers don't...it's basically infantry at a higher tempo, then after 2 year's GD you can specialise from the SBS/ML side of things to being a chef and everything inbetween

God bless and be good to anyone who joins a foreign Army.

Hey its great that they have a choice, and I for one support any young lad

who wants to go across and join a foreign Army.

                  No harm on that

I love to read all abou tlife in the Defence Forces from lads

People join the Royal Marines for the love of roll mat fighting and scrotal baked bean eating.

                    Let's face it. Who wouldn't.

Seriously though there are many reasons besides teh usual bullshit about the PDF being a barracks army we're only oirland etc. (Hasn't anyone else noticed that most PDF ORs bitch about excessive "opportunities" for o/seas operations rather than a drought.) Among them are personal and organisational politics and family connections.

Also let us not forget that small numbers of ex HM Forces Pers. have joined the DF in the past and a number of ex PDF soldiers have gone to the UK for whatever reasons.

A lot of members of BA join as it is one of the few options they have, even officers.

My cousin's boyfriend got commissioned mid this year, is going to Afghanistan/Iraq (can't remember which) next year and then plans to leave.

Members of the RM really have to want to be there!

That would suggest that male members of the RN wore trousers at some point.

I've heard of several recent 'defections' from a couple of PDF battalions to the Royal Marines and BA.
