But isnt the whole British defence establishment a very traditional institution, the guards units? surely theres no need for the fancy shite of marchin around in mad uniforms, why not axe that? what of the various other units such as horse guards and horse artillery, their very title betrays a conservative mindset
The household division is the most senior in the BA, Cant ever see them losing the ceremonial role.
7 Para Royal horse artillery is just a name linked to their past, they are basically the artillery of 16AAbde, they dont do ceremonial or horses. But I can see units being alot more streamlined.
Yes but i was pointing out the strength of conservative feeling the UKs armed forces. If they were as progressive as I think they would need to be to carry out a massive transformation such as you outlined above I think the institutional mindset would have led to the the word horse being dropped, if you catch my drift? ah fiercely forward moving/thinking mindset as opposed to one wedded to tradition
I can't see it saving a lot of money to be honest?! The commando brigade is more of less self contained, the brigade is still required so no cuts there.
Possible cuts?:
Commando Training Centre (some courses could be run by army units and then a specialist phase-eg like the way the paras do it)
The band (they have a war role to)
Fleet Protection Group (the job could potentially be done by trained sailors)
Uniforms (but every corps/regiment has its own in the British Army anyway)
Commando Training Centre (some courses could be run by army units and then a specialist phase-eg like the way the paras do it)
Para training is done entirely by Para instructors at all stages, albeit at the same locations as other Regiments. The Royal Marines will cling on to Lymphstone for dear life, as as soon as it goes people will start saying "sure Royal Marines are just the same as everyone else", and they'll be gone. While 3 Cdo Bde is on the army list and has army units attached, the Royal Marines are quite insistent that they're the property of the Royal Navy.
So that even the lowest sailor has a ruff, tuff bootie to defend him against the Army in pub fights.Or hold other sailors down for "hazing" purposes

ask any Royal Marine to show you his British Forces ID card - it says in big bold letters across the top:
ROYAL NAVY
hello sailor
our lads always give them a hard time about it and it really winds them up.
I wouldn't fcuk with them, all the same...
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
RGJ, going back to your recent post, is it possible that the mysterious friend of yours in the PDF who attended a secret Coy briefing about the Army downsizing
Told you all this in the NAAFI and is in fact in your unit and not the PDF? :P
Any hints yet on whats coming out of the bag tomorrow? seems like operation tell everyone leave is cancelled had more leaks than this, an indication it'll be a real shocker maybe?
