  • Pre Mobilization Training update

OK lads, so here goes update number 2.

We have completed our Pre-Mobilization training, which went well despite the usual Army silliness and turbulence associated with anything like this. In fact the unit did very well, exceeded the commanders expectations (which were high to begin with) and many of the required training standards. The focus of this event is to complete the individual required training and then we'll move on to the collective training. It was a long four weeks, not help by temperatures hovering around 40 degrees Celsius.

First part was ranges; we qualified on the M-9 day/night/NBC. Then zero Backup iron sights, ACOG, CCO and PEQ-15's, we then qualified on the ACOG day/night (with NVG and PEQ) and NBC. All gunners qualified on the Minimi, M-240B, MK-19 and M-2 .50 cal. Selected Soldiers also had to qualify on the shotgun and our snipers had to do the sniper qualification tables. Ranges, although hot were a good time. All quals have to be done in full kit, body armour, gloves, knee and elbow pads and protective eyewear. Everyone also did a familiarization fire on all the crew served weapons as well. Nothing like 400 rounds of .50 cal to brighten your day!!!!!

We licensed loads of drivers on the HMMV, got everyone trained in basic first aid and did the myriad of other task such as land nav, roll over simulator and various lanes, such as react to sniper, enter and clear a room, react IED and so on.

Another high point was the hand to hand fighting (Combatives), which was a great way to get some frustration out. We set it up so the junior lads would be fighting the officers and leaders, that's always a good way to blow off steam. Bragging rights for taking down the Sergeant Major were a high point!!! Mind you, the CSM is a fit bastard and he prevailed most of the time despite fatigue.

All in all it was a demanding event, day usually started at 0500 and up until 2200 on your feet most of the time. The heat was brutal, but in true Infantry form, we declined vehicles most of the time and foot marched to the training, much to the amusement of the staff who are not used to seeing units walk.

We ended it by the CO giving a lecture on Counter Insurgency, he talked for about half an hour, making the comment "I only have 80 more slides to go..." While the lads were on break, we brought in the pizzas we ordered (all the officers chipped in) and when he started the next slide it faded to the DVD of the movie "The 300" which went down very well and was a good time.

Culmination was a CH-47 parachute jump, daytime, no combat kit in almost no winds, perfect weather. So all in all it was a good event. Tiring though, I came home and slept for 14 hours. Tried to attach some more pictures, but not having luck. Will try again later

Sounds really interesting Irishgr! Thanks for sharing, looking forward to seeing more pics too! Which unit are you with, if you don't mind me asking?
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

            Hey RGR,

Why license a load of drivers on the HMMVV if you are not going to be using them here?

BTW - is your SIPR working?
There may be only one time in your life when your country will call upon you and you will be the only one who can do the nasty job that has to be done -- do it or forever after there will be the taste of ashes in your mouth.
