British Army divers train in Zoo

British Army divers from 39 Engineer Regiment have been carrying out an underwater survey of the penguin enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo, inspecting the tank for leaks whilst satisfying statutory training requirements.



Far from scaring them off, the 13 Cambridge-based soldiers aroused the curiosity of the penguins, who swam freely with them.

The zoo, which is a charity, was unable to perform this task themselves this year. Therefore, the soldiers performed the survey and used it to satisfy mandatory training requirements, getting good value from the activity, which directly relates to their employment on operations.

well done to all Sappers concerned - a great initiative which provides valuable training whislt helping a very good cause.

I misread the title of this thread, and have spent a few minutes wondering why DRIVERS were surveying underwater, and what kind of vehicle they were driving.

I shouldn't have gone to Specsavers!

lol, you're right Goldie, i think the rest of our Army, and not just our Army should do more of this.

perhaps this would also be a good way forward for the Irish DF to get involved in similar projects to undertake very valuable training that also benefits another organisation.

I remember a few years back an EOD robot being used in one of the Irish Mines to "rescue" a piece of machinery that had broke down.
It provided real world(and not as risky as normal) training for the operators of the Hobo, while at the same time providing a valuable service to the Mines.

Reminds me of the time the Customs House in Dublin was

under going major restoration. Metal ties that were corroding in the block work needed

locating so the Army engineers used there gear to sort it out.
