  • British Navy-More Admirals than ships.

A news report this morning mentioned the above- does anyone on here know how many ships there are in the Irish Navy and how many Admirals. I trust we have proportionally as many as our British cousins.

The number of admirals serving in the Royal Navy now outstrips the number of warships in the Fleet, new research has revealed.

24 September 2008. Hardly makes it news....
      But there's no danger
      It's a professional career
      Though it could be arranged
With just a word in Mr. Churchill's ear
If you're out of luck you're out of work
We could send you to johannesburg.

I know that is an old report but this was mentioned on the radio today in regard to the latest cuts.

we don't have an Admiral as the fleet is too small to justify the title

Commodore is equal to a 1-star admiral, no?

In the US yes as they have no Commodore rank.

The Defence Act makes provision for naval ranks up to that of Rear Admiral.

cant see why not a senior (commodore) naval officer cant go all the way as they would be equally qualified to hold this position...

To be fair, Assistant COS was a brig Gen appointment, and did not require promotion, while DCOS is a Maj Gen appointment.

It would make lots of sense though for at least one of the General staff(COS+2xDCOS) to be from the Air Corps or navy at all times.

It would make sense but the AC & NS only make up approx 20% of the DF
