FN Herstal has recently been awarded a new contract by the UK Ministry of Defence for the supply of up to 176 MINIMITM 7.62 light machine guns by the end of 2011.
The contract also includes optional quantities of a further 250 MINIMITM 7.62 machine guns to be delivered annually over a three-year period from 2012 to 2014 should these options be exercised.

    LSW replacement?

Way too few of them...SF probably...unless they're just for Herrick.

I dunno. Is 900+ a reasonable abount for dispersal amongst infantry units only?

              Probably UOR kit for herrick.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

our latest addition to the British Army Rifle Section.

                MINIMI 7.62 Lightweight Machine Gun

The MINIMI 7.62 is a lightweight machine gun (8.4kg) and can therefore be carried over rough ground and fired from standing position while providing the range and target effect of the 7.62 ammunition. The model chosen by the UK MoD also features a sliding buttstock for easier carriage that incorporates a hydraulic buffer for stabilized rate of fire and reduced recoil forces.

The MINIMI 7.62 machine gun offers similar ergonomics and maneuverability as the MINIMI 5.56 machine gun chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO calibre.

The MINIMI 5.56 has already been in service in their thousands with the British Armed Forces since 2003.

                  replacing or augmenting the 5.56?
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

i would say augmenting - replacing the GPMG if anything.

the 7.62 Minimi will probably remain in the Delta fire-team and the 5.56 Minimi will remain in Charlie.

Wasn't there some criticism in some sectors of the lack of range and punch of the 5.56 variant though? No paper evidence I can point to, it's just something that's in the back of my mind...maybe it was something similar to when yous brought back the 7.62 rifle?

Either way, both are good bits of kit, the 5.56 throws down some serious lead and the 7.62 will have the punch to back it up. What are the stats between this and the GPMG like btw?

The 7.62 MINIMI with spare barrel is about a 1/3 lighter than a MAG and spare barrel but it has less effective range and rate of fire.

not necessarily 'less effective' as a faster rate of fire is not always best and the effective ranges are actually similar:

the lighter weight and shorter overall length, particularly with the folding butt and the better ergonomics in general will be a big factor as i understand we had already trialled the 'lightweight GPMG' from FN.
