  • US Army Landpower Homeland Defence

Very interesting video on the US Army’s approach to defending the “homeland”

I’d watch the whole thing but

specifically IMHO very interesting at 24:56 for the hybrid, grey zone etc definition

We really need to hear these arguments, contextualised for an Irish audience, from the equivalent guys/gals at our own DoD.

Long story short; believe he's illuminating 'the gaps' that full-spectrum total defence can address.

Finland and Sweden would be the leading practitioners we are most familiar with.

Irish peacekeeping overseas, a valuable moral good in it's own right, is conducted largely as a support function to the Department of Foreign Affairs. Finland recently reassessed it's priorities; and decided that it's own national defence should take priority over existing UN commitments.

While not arguing for any reduction in our overseas deployments; I would contend that we should be, at a minimum, conscious of the trade-offs we are making; and the effects that such trade-offs may have on our capacity to establish a broader-spectrum more comprehensive national defence.

The more I read and watch about hybrid operations/grey zone etc and now multi-domain ops (which appears to be the US means of addressing it), the more interested I become.

IMHO many of the scenarios in an Irish context could mean the DF need the ability to deploy sizeable numbers in ATCP and ATCA. That is potentially true even if the action can be attributed to a State actor (however at least initially it is unlikely to be attributed).

The ability to (positively) attribute is of course very much based on intelligence and evidence. It is very possible we will never be able to do so using just our own State’s resources.

For too long both the Overseas and ATCP operational commitments led Irish defemce thinking and procurement.
        Defece came second hand.
It should always have been the other way around. The surplus capability generated by Defence can be used in ATCP/ATCA and overseas.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

'Tools of coercive gradualism.. to attack public morale.. and undermine faith in democratic processes.'

I could say much more, and have previously, here and elsewhere; but for now I'll limit myself to the following.

The chronic failure of state policy on housing, across two decades, has now produced a housing crisis that is actively being exploited as a 'gateway drug' for political ne'er-do-wells, Trumpists, and worse. Unless addressed urgently, comprehensively, and at an unprecedented scale it will remain a focus of attention for those who wish harm to our democracy.
