A new memorial being unveiled today comemorates 15, 500 Servicemen and women killed on active service or in training since the end of the Second World War. It's located in Alrewas, Staffordshire and was designed by a foreign sounding chap named Liam O’Connor. I wonder how many Irish people are on the memorial.
Not v impressive...why are there figures of a woman and child and a "mourning man"? Seems way too "touch-feely", not very martial. Would also query why the names of personnel who died in training accidents are on there. I'd assume eventually they'll have a website with a database of names which are on it.

Because wives, husbands, mothers, fathers and children get left behind to do the mourning. If you get killed in training you are just as dead as if you get killed in Iraq. There is a searchable database.
combatlogo...this is the centerpiece of the ANZAC memorial in Sydney...it depicts a fallen soldier borne on his shield by his mourning mother, sister and wife....do you think its 'suitably martial' or 'not v. impressive'?

Lord Louis Mountbatten is on the memorial. Born 25 June 1900, died 27 August 1979. I doubt if he was still serving at the age of 79.

At the rate that the British Army is shrinking (aka being ripped apart by politicians), it'll have been disbanded before it even gets near filling that wall.

Your point re the Vietnam memorial is disengenuous, it's a memorial specifically for nurses who served in Vietnam. The main Vietnam memorial is the wall and 3 statues of Vietnam era grunts. Care to speculate on what a child is doing in it?

The Brits don't award Purple Hearts.
So they decided to open the memorial to all men and women who died in service. It's not really a novel departure. Every name on a WW2 memorial for instance is not a combat death.
I already have. The child represents the children of the dead service people. Memorials are designed for the living, not for the dead. They are intended as places that the relatives of the dead may come and visit them since many of their graves are far from home or non-existent.

Combatlogo, if a guy on active duty in or out of a combat zone,dies because he chokes on a tough Army sausage, do you really thinks he is not worthy of decent rememberance? He is worth honouring for having served, regardless of duty, cause of death, location,etc. If they took down all the names of those who died in stupid accidents, a lot of the war memorials would look fairly thin.
