Hi all,
I am looking to research HM Frigate Saldana which sink in Lough Swilly in 1811.
All I know so far is the ships name, the Capt was Capt Packenham a brother of the Earl of Longford and the resting place of a number of the crew.
I have heard it said that she was running from a storm when she hit the Swilly Rock and lost her rudder but there are mixed reports of survivors (1 girl or the ships parrot?) and also where she went down.
Most reports say she sank on the Swilly Rock area yet the southern end of Portsalon beach is called Saldana head. There is also local talk that the 'new road' was pushed over the crews mass grave when it was being built.
Does anybody have any idea where I could get more info on the Ship, crew and its voyages.
Many thanks.
