On this day, the 13th of November 2001, 7 years ago at 07:30 hours as a bugle played a salute the Irish tricolor was lowered for the last time, and was replaced by the Ghanaian national flag.
Honours were rendered, military salutes given, and the pipe band played. The final Irish Battalion of U.N.I.F.I.L. (1) marched out of Camp Shamrock onto waiting transport to bring them to Beirut Airport and the journey home to Ireland, thus ending 23 years of continuous Irish commitment to the United Nations Peace-keeping Force In South Lebanon.
Respect to those who fell, in land's far from Erin's green shore,
They shall NOT be forgotten,
May they all +Rest In Peace +
Respect & sympathy to the families of those who gave their lives in the service of peace,
Respect to those who served, in the past, present & future, in the Service of Peace.
Connaught Stranger ex- "C" Coy, 46th Irish Battalion, U.N.I.F.I.L.
