Recently started reading up on the victoria cross and must say some of the stories are truly breathtaking. But 2 things emerged from a conversation i had with a civvy friend on the subject recently.
1. He said that proportionally more VC's have been won by by Irishmen than any other nationality.
2. He also said that quite a high percentage (he mentioned somewhere around 70%) of VC winners were the eldest siblings from families where there was no father present when they were growing up.
I've searched and searched for any info to back up or disprove these very interesting claims but cant really find any. Plenty info out there on the amount of VC awarded to irishmen and their individual stories. But nothing to confirm proportionallity.
If anyone can shed any light on either point mentioned here (with ref's please) it would be hugely appreciated.
PS: To the mods, only just twigged (a few minutes after originally posting this) that maybe it should be in the history threads. Apologies.
