  • Restoring Vickers Helmet

    Hi Guys+Girls.

    Iv recently accquired a old irish army vickers helmet in need of some work.

    I will have to sand blast the thing and repaint it.
    Does anyone know what kind of paint was on them? Found a bit of info online '(Army Green paint with 1/100 matt black paint' but not sure, any help there would be great!!

    Also need a liner!! any ideas where il get one of those??

    Guys thanks in advance

    Be very careful before sandblasting, these were made of a very poor quality steel and you could do some serious damage with sandblasting.

    There is nowhere in Ireland that you can obtain a replacement inner, possible solution is to buy a replica German WW1 inner out of the USA.

    With regards (Army Green paint with 1/100 matt black paint.) that's not a great recipe, however some of the old recruiting posters give a hint as to the colour, no matter what you do you will never get it spot on.

    A good place to read up on a Vicker's restoration is here:-

      It's original colour was closer to grey than green.

        If you have to blast it, use walnut blasting instead.It's much better on thin gauges of metal than sand and it also allows any layers of paint underneath to reveal themselves.

          In general historical items should not have any work done to them that cannot be undone.

          So replacing the liner is fine but sandblasting and painting isn't.

            I've had one of these for years, I can't remember where I acquired it, but it is painted silver (by a previous owner). Anyone any idea what it would be worth? It's not exactly a family heirloom, I'd be happy enough to put it towards Disneyland!
            'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
            'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
            Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
            He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

              Is it true that the DoD painted many of these helmets white for issue to Civil Defence in the 1950s.

                I saw one a few years back priced €200. But it was in mint condition.

                During the War, I believe.

                  Its up to the individual as its their property, but at some stage all helmet depending on condition needs renovation or you will have a pile of rust particles on a shelf.

                    I feel sorry for poor vickers

                    that his problems concerning his helmet are being made public
                    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
                    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
                    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
                    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
                    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
                    Are full of passionate intensity.

                        Thanks HH. You are the only one who has shown any consideration. I feel very exposed.
                        "Fellow-soldiers of the Irish Republican Army, I have just received a communication from Commandant Pearse calling on us to surrender and you will agree with me that this is the hardest task we have been called upon to perform during this eventful week, but we came into this fight for Irish Independence in obedience to the commands of our higher officers and now in obedience to their wishes we must surrender. I know you would, like myself, prefer to be with our comrades who have already fallen in the fight - we, too, should rather die in this glorious struggle than submit to the enemy." Volunteer Captain Patrick Holahan to 58 of his men at North Brunswick Street, the last group of the Four Courts Garrison to surrender, Sunday 30 April 1916.

                          I understand Penecillin should be able to solve most problems..

                            Preservation rather than renovation is the official line.

                              What official line?

                              At some stage without renovation there is no preservation.

                              The only thing that would irk me is if an item was 90% renovated

                              then placed up for sale as 100% original.
