  • 75MM Artillery Piece ?

I have seen reference to a 75mm artillery piece used by the army during the emergency. Does anyone know what this gun was I am wondering if it was the French Canon de 75 modèle 1897.

According to JP Duggan's book, 18 were purchased in 41-42, no other info.

That's exactly what they were. There are two of them either side of the flag on the square in Mullingar Bks., although they are currently on stands while the wooden wheels are being refurbished

There's a working French "75" in the Railway Museum, Dromod. It's on loan from the DF.

            Britain

Back in 1940 the british bought former US army 75mm guns, and passed some on to us in 1941, ( I thought 12 rather than 18).

They were used into the 1970's by FCA units.

No. They came from the US.
Yes. There was 12 not 18.

                  What units used them last?
I cant find any info of them after 1949.

From what I can find about FCA Artillery is they used 18 Pounders, 4.5 Inch guns, 120mm Mortars and 25 Pounders.

What calibre are the 18 Pounders?

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

The 75mm guns came from the US as well as 20 thousand Springfield rifles. (Does anyone know if they were M1903 or P17 rifles?)

The P-14/M1917 Enfield (according to Wiki)

'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

It was not the P14 because its .303 the weapons were .30-06 and manufactured by Springfield not Enfield. Its was either the M1903 or P1917.

                              Hi there,
The DF had the Springfield and the Ross Rifle, as far as I know. The American weapon was in .30-06 and the Ross was a .303 but was regarded as unreliable when firing British-made .303.It preferred a diet of Canadian rounds but there was a very limited supply of same. They were issued to the LDF, so I was told.
