You could say the same for Iran up until the late 1970s. Rising university educated middle class in both cases. It'll take a long time to get that back.
I wouldn't imagine the average Afghan lived liked that even back then to be honest. You were probably looking at a small westernised elite, and a much larger poor, rural, conservative and religious population.
That said, I'm sure that 30 years of non-stop war have done enourmous harm to the country.
