  • Regiments/units in and around Dublin 1925.

Hi all, wonder if anybody can help. I am trying to learn what my great grandfather was up to in about 1925. He was a captain in the Irish army around this time living on Howth road, Raheny. He was from Derry but after the war of independence he had to move to Dublin. I think there is little point in my contacting the defence forces record office as my family is kind of spread to the four winds and we are not in touch any longer. All I have is an old photograph of him in his uniform and a black and tan medal.

Just thought knowing what military units were in the area might give my a new road to search down, I don't suppose he had a car in the 20's so wherever he was based must have been in walking distance from Howth rd.

Thanks for looking, it would be nice if I could pass on his medal and photo with part of his story. Rich.

You refer to the National Army. Not sure about 1925 but on 24 Jan 1923 it could be 1 of 4 of so infantry battalions (on the Northside of Dublin) plus any number of other units.

    The infantry units then were:
    13 & 57 Inf Bns (Collins Bks)
    16 Inf Bn (Mountjoy)

If you have his name and the dates he served or photos, Military Archives may be able to help!

Hi and thanks for the reply, 1925 is a rough guess based on my grandad. I know that he went with his dad to Dublin and we have a primary school report from a school in Derry belonging to him.

I think I will gather together what info I have and write off to the archives, I'm not his closest decendant, but some went to Canada, some stayed in Derry, Dublin and my lot are in England - nothing ventured, nothing gained and all that. Do you know what the route was to becoming an officer back then? From what I can gather, he would have joined around 1918 when things would have been a little bit up in the air so to speak.

          Thanks again, Rich.

Get in touch with Army Record's , Comandant Victor Laing , you would be surprised at what they have . I was able to get the record's of a relative of mine who served in the War Of Independence and the Civil War

According to Adrian English's book, the following units existed in 1924 in Dublin:

              No. 6 Brigade - 16, 17 & 18 Inf Bn
              No. 7 Brigade - 19, 20 & 21 Inf Bn

The following are also part of E Command but it's not stated where the were based.

              2nd Armoured Car Coy
              E Comd Signals Coy
              E Comd MP Coy
              E Comd Transport Coy

Not a typical address for member of the army - there were no barracks in the north east of the city as it wasn't considered a threat axis. While he might not have had a car, commuting by tram would have been an option to any of the main barracks.

Thanks for all the pointers, I think I will get writing to the records people. All of his grandchildren are still alive but nobody seems to know much or seems to be that interested to find out.

The address is definately correct as the photo I have is taken outside it and the house was passed to my great aunt who we used to visit there many moons ago. It also turns out that I was wrong about the 1925 part, He remained in Derry after the war of independance until 1927. I found an old newspaper cutting about my grandad returning to Derry to meet his sister after 70 years apart - it says they were forced to move to Dublin so I guess that could have been due to some reorganising of the army.

Thanks again for the tips, Rich.
