I dont know what you expect to find in your Grandad's file LID-

NOrmally Military files contain such items as what Unit you served in - what overseas,
    what course, medlas etc.

I am sure your family know what Unit your Granddad was in and I am sure they know
    if he was overseas etc-

However the files also contain stuff like discplinary records and medical records-

it would be a negative value to you to find out your Grandad got 12 days in the digger

for being absent or that your Grandad had halitosis (these are makey up things)

I would suggest you ask your family what Unit he served in and then contact the

relevant ONE branch to see if any of the lads served with the man himself-

if so contact them and find out the human side of your grandad rather than a boring

paper side that wouldnt reflect the person you know-

Unless that is your Grandad was Michael Collins/Dev/or other such lads.

It is more than likely covered by the Data Protection and Freedom of Information Acts hence why not everyone can get access. Try contacting them.
