  • letters on the base of a 25-pdr cartridge

    Hi all,
I have recently acquired one of these and I want to know what the letters "RLB" mean. The case is dated 1955 and is also stamped "MK 2/1" and has the broad arrow and "LOT 142" on it.

    regards

RLB would be the manufacturer code - google suggests that it stands for Royal Laboratories Birtley. Mk2/1 or MkII/I refers to the type of ordnance (the barrel, breech and associated parts as opposed to the trunnions, carriage etc). MkII/I is the MkII ordnance with a muzzle brake and breech counterweight added to allow charge super to be fired.
