Whatever happened to the proposed new Enlisted Service Dress with the standing collar from around 2016?It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

Who are you trying to kid? You know perfectly well that their function as PPE, motorcycle, wearing, boots, pair, for the use of, is entirely secondary to their use in this picture. It has more to do with Cav vanity and desire not to seen as mere Infantry, or, God forbid, Air Corps. I know you are a biker of many years standing and you would not dare turn out for a run with your mates wearing these, unless you were a ChiPs Walt. And as for the Glengarries.....

I still have my old pair of FT boots of that pattern, as worn by Gardai until the Daytona boots came along. They Are much more comfortable to wear than the modern counterpart. Particularly if you have to walk any more than 50m.For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Why? because modifying Service headwear by ironing it or moulding it is more of a fashion statement/ trying to look cool or edgy/ passive-aggressive bullying (if you don't wear your hat OUR way, you're not "in")/ perpetuates pointless inter-service rivalry/ encourages the worst kind of petty bullshit that drives people out of the DF and also has consequences. My personal favourites are the Depot Corporals who sewed in a seam on their OG combat trousers, which pulled them tight and this had unfortunate consequences when they got wet in the Glen. Ally? yeah. Stupid? Very. Also, the aircrew (pilot and crewmen) who served on the Alouettes and decided to put their own badges on the flying helmets and wondered why the protective coating began to come off. Embarrassed faces all round when the helmets have to go back to the UK to be reprotected. As for sailor's caps, they are virtually unmodifiable and they utterly define the wearer as a sailor and have done for decades. Instant product recognition, you might say. No need for tweaking or altering shapes or messing with stitching. I get why the Cav want their own identity, distinct from the Infantry, but generating seperate kinds of Mess Dress or No1s, for no real need, strikes me as kind of pointless. There are more important things to spend money on.

Enlisted SDs are being reviewed at present. On a side note the business case for peaked caps instead of Glengarries for AR Officers has been shot down."Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.
