    Thumbs up Old Dustys

    Are there any old (or not so old ) ex-naval dustys out there who could tell me where I could get some of the rank markings of the early days of the Naval Service,or The Marine Service, Scarce as gold fillings in hens teeth I know

    Welcome aboard

    adn whats a dusty
    Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold;
    Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
    The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere***
    The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
    The best lack all conviction, while the worst
    Are full of passionate intensity.

    Dustys were another name for the stewards in the old days of the naval service, to call all the ex navy people that would be offensive.

    Dusty is naval slang for a storeman/quartermaster.

    Drylander, are you talking about the "straight" stripes? ie. one stripe = L/S two = PO etc.?

    You must be a dusty yourself. You know your onions. You are dead right about the job and the stripes. Know the whereabouts of any. Could be a pint or two in it

    I saw one of the straight stripes on ebay recently..as in the last few days. Given they have gone from service by about thirty years..doubtful.

    Scribes, Dustys and Stewards were all part of the admin branch..all wore the quay and quill divisional badge..as did cooks..or chefs as they like to be termed as now.

    Dusty comes from the RN speak..Jack Dusty

    "Jack dusty - The stores on old War Ships used to be very dusty places and those that worked in them always seemed to have a layer of dust on themselves! So members of the ‘Stores Accountant’ branch have always been know as Jack Dusty."

    taken from the RN website.
