      128. Deputy Seán Sherlock asked the Minister for Defence if a decision has been made in regard to the replacement of the Air Corps Cessna fleet; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [42773/08]

Minister for Defence (Deputy Willie O’Dea): The issue of the replacement of the Air Corps Cessna Fleet is under consideration. The question of funding the replacement programme has to be considered in tandem with the overall equipment requirements of the Defence Forces generally and the funding available for this. As the Deputy may be aware, a very significant level of investment in new equipment for the Air Corps has taken place in recent years.

The comprehensive investment programme included: · The delivery of eight Pilatus training aircraft at a total cost of €60m, inclusive of VAT. · Two light utility EC 135 helicopters acquired from Eurocopter S.A.S. at a cost of €12.8m, inclusive of VAT. · Six utility AW 139 helicopters acquired from AgustaWestland, Italy at a cost of €75m inclusive of VAT, the final one of which was delivered this month. · A major mid life upgrade on the two Casa maritime patrol aircraft, at a cost of €16.5m.

G-JOON para flights have been done in the shorts and flip flops combined with a T-Shirt and Bail Out Rig.... but being so close to an open door at FL100 soon put a stop to practice!

It seems that Air Corps pilots aren't the only ones to wear "the 'Bans" when flying Cessnas eh?!

                  • 149. Deputy Willie Penrose asked the Minister for Defence if a decision has been made in regard to the replacement of the Air Corps Cessna fleet; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3513/09]

Minister for Defence (Deputy Willie O’Dea): The issue of the replacement of the Air Corps Cessna Fleet has been considered by my Department in consultation with the military authorities. The question of funding the replacement programme has to be considered in tandem with the overall equipment requirements of the Defence Forces generally and the funding available for this. The Cessna replacement programme is not a current priority and as such, there is no specific provision in this year’s Defence Estimates for this project.

                    • It is a characteristic of Willie's replies in the Dail, to fill space in his replies with well-known details of what's already been bought or is on order, which is, in essence, a way of avoiding the question. So no change there, then....

                        • The USAF Special Operations Command has ordered ten Polish PZL Mielec M-28 Skytrucks, These are twin-engined STOL aircraft, marketed as replacements for TWin Otters or Casa C-212s.

The type is already in service with the Polish military and others, and it has western engines - PT6s - and western certification. However it is said to cost half the cost of an equivalent western aircraft.

One for the Air Corps short list perhaps? Sounds like it would be useful in Chad.

                              • The Casas have a similar domed window, which can be opened in flight, especially for photography. One Air Corps pilot, up in a Casa on a patrol, decided to have a look out. The wind sucked off his Raybans and headset, much to his dismay and everyone else's delight
