  • Sorry, wrong vid for some reason. Right one should be there now.
If you have to do it, you always have to do it right. Either it makes a difference, or it’s good practice so that when it does make a difference, it gets done right.

    • Sounds like he means business, well done CB, maybe he should join the RDF 2nd line, just change the regs to allow it.simple.

Impossible, Regs are written in stone and buried under the foundation of DFHQ.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

        • It is possible to transfer from FLR as officer to SLR (AR/NSR) if under 55 and retain rank

          • Yes to transfer but there must be a vacancy for the rank.

            • I know a few who have said if they could go from PDF direct to 2nd line rdf, hold rank and if overseas for RDF went ahead they would do that. Get more money in private sector and still able to go overseas, without all the hassle in between.

Plenty of vacancies but may not be where they want to go

Overseas is out of the question for reservists until security of tenure in civilian employment is under pinned by modern legislation... and they wouldn't get more money as they wouldn't be paid their civilian employment while deployed , only their UN pay.
Covid 19 is not over ....it's still very real..Hand Hygiene, Social Distancing and Masks.. keep safe

Not necessarily especially in next year or so as a lot of people could end up unemployed
They would also receive their line pay Etc

Also you assume overseas means Syria, Lebanon etc for 6 months... not necessarily:
                      - family friendly tour is 3 months I think
                      - could be a few days to a couple of months to bring over equipment (eg drivers), upgrade systems (eg CIS, engineers etc)
                      - could be a few days to a few weeks at a conference, exercise, course, competition

“Overseas” is a broad description in the Defence Act

i think (subject to PDF person on the board confirming this) that the "family friendly" option only applies where you would have a "wingman" to commit to the other half of the deployment

                          • You just need another on the opposite 3month family friendly policy. I'm sure that will not be a huge hurdle to get over. Plenty of Reservists have spoken about there desire to serve overseas, if government do it right they will have employment protection, if gov dont do it right, those Reservists onn low paid jobs, could be really tempted to take a break. Remember they will be on fulltime pay from forming up and UN while deployed and paid on leave when they return. Gives them the chance to get savings together and up skill their cv. This is a great opportunity, should it come to pass, and a real boost to reach our 4900 strength.

The reservists they would be potentially be focusing on for overseas would be specialists don't forget. Doctors, engineers, technicians and the likes.

If an initiative to get reservists overseas did get off the ground, I'd imagine an infantry 3* who had lost his job still wouldn't get within a country mile of going overseas in that role.
