  • The HSE has continued to interview in the past, including overseas when there was no positions here - it is one thing they are good at doing, spending money on non front line areas....
    The gov even encouraged extra Therapist courses to be started, when the state was the only empolyer....and decided not to hire..
    Hopefully they do hire more Medical staff - my point is that left hand often doesnt even know there is a right hand - never mind what it is doing.

    • And there was me thinking this post was about the recruitment embargo for the DF.

      Who cares about the HSE.

      • There are dispensations for the health & education sectors.

        The bad thing about the recruitment embargo is the resources, time & money that went into the system that has now been wasted.

        The potentially good thing is we can now spend the next 1.5 years improving the standard of training.

        • In fairness, EMT's etc are frontline services which are desperately needed (more now than ever) unfortunately soldiers (pdf&rdf) are not. I would much prefer to see frontline medical staff being recruited than no one at all!

          • What about when they are serving overseas? doing escorts ? etc

            What about those you have been invested in? eg training cadets, recruits, getting recruits to attestation is expensive enough

            What about those who join since circa 94 on contracts that may not have them renewed

            Comment

            • i joined after 1994 and i have just had my contract renewed this month.
              no one will not be signed back on unless they deserve not to be (which was the case anyway!)
              Its going to be a case of any one who has served 21+ leaving and not being replaced!
              in my (small) unit there are at least 5 who are leaving because they are afraid that grat will be taxed. These guys wont be replaced.

              • I think your right spud the grat is looking good to be taxed

                my own crowd are suffering the same fate a lot of senior lads are leaving because of this fear

                one thing that petrifes a lot of them

                is if B Lenihan backdates the tax to include 09-

                maybe the only way out is splurge the grat on wine women and song

                let his get that back out of me

                  • i thought grat was taxed at source anyway, and later refunded in the form of a tax rebate?
                    anyway, people taking retirement for the purpose of getting grat tax-free would need a new source of income;
                    the army pension may not sustain their families or lifestyle and social welfare top-ups only come about if the pension is below the applicable minimum level of social welfare;
                    even then, the top-up will only bring their income up to the level of the applicable minimum social welfare payment;
                    eg army pension for retired soldier and spouse of, eg, €250 weekly falls below minimum social welfare payment applicable to 1 adult & 1 adult dependent of, eg, €300 weekly;
                    welfare will top up to the sum of €50 weekly, still little enough to exist on;
                    If grat is to be taxed for keeps, then the retiring personnel would be better off retiring at the commencement of the tax year, not acquiring further employment, thereby not having sufficient income to be in the tax net and thus qualifying for a tax rebate on their grat;
                    i'm sure the staff services personnel in the barracks would be able to give guidance in these matters and perhaps even arrange for group rates for financial advice from reputable accountants;

                          • I reckon it would be a disgrace if lenihan taxed the grat!!!
                            Anyone who has 21yrs+ done, joined up when pay and conditions were crap.
                            it would be a real kick in the stones to screw them over after serving their time!
