I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.
In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.
You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

My deepest sympathy to Ned's wife and family and colleagues.
Capt. Roche was commissioned as an officer of the Reserve on 28th April 1991.
It has been a privilage to know him, a true officer and a gentleman, may he rest in peace.

RIP Ned, you'll be sorely missed. He was always a calm influence when those around him lost their heads. Always in with a quick sharp quip that would have us all rolling around the floor with laughter . His humour was tempered by professionalism and a respect for the abilities of those he commanded.
My sincerest Condolences to his family .
