  • This hull design is for a Frigate profile with certain flexibility for undefined roles. There would be a lot of "Fitted For" electronics to allow role changes and the consequent smart crew would have to be up-to-date to slot into the role-of-the-day. Nightmare stuff. Our need is for the vessel to be commissioned with all roles in situ and all hardware/software present. The ship will need a period of work up, with friends ,to be qualified in roles ,and train all crew+spares. Hopefully the ship will be fitted out fully afloat at all tides. The ship depicted doesnt look capable of being an MRV.

      • Now that would be a fantastic increase in capability.
        183m Long
        25.9m broad,
        8.62m Draft.
Crew of just 43, with space for up to 116 additional.
However her introduction into service has been interesting, with the Koreans cutting a few corners, ant the Norwegians using every minute of her 12 month warranty work up period to find all the problems.
It is based on the BMT Aegir design and can carry Approx 8,000 cubic metres of cargo fuel,200 tonnes of cargo munitions, 300 tonnes of aviation fuel,Up to 40 TEU container.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

        • When even the US Marines are looking for something "smaller" than their current Amphibs, though with the US Navy/Marines who knows what they mean when they say "smaller".

          • The USN never realy replaced their old LSTs like for like. Their current amphibs are mostly lightly armed large floating targets that require the protection of escorts. They make a huge scene wherever they arrive, due to their immense size.
The Newport LST were just under 600feet LOA, 70 foot broad, and could beach on shallow water to unload their vehicles.
The Whidbey Island class are slightly larger, but due for retirement also with no replacement in sight. (SLEP to see first of class serve until 2027).
Main thing is their big flat tops require lots of space to operate, and this isnt always available. Slightly smaller ship in the 600 foot range could give them more options.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

The USMC and Navy see the need for many ships and mention deployments of assets to LCS and frigate sized ships. They are probably joining the interest in EPVs and the emerging problems in the Pacific region, if not soon but certainly in the next 30 years.

              • Seems the USN has had enough of their LCS ships and is starting next year to get rid of the first four with more to follow as the FFG(X) come online.
Two Freedom class for free would not be too bad!!

Jesus no. Do you want to bankrupt the DF? Those things should be Sinkexed or scrapped.

                  • So much synthetic materials there they probably wouldn't sink, no matter how many holes you put in them.
The LCS plan was a very expensive mistake. A cutter type vessel would have provided the same capability. Unfortunately the USN procurement is tied into the defence industry that is all about money and jobs. They hoped for export orders to spread the R&d cost. Only the Saudis took the bait.
Hopefully FFG(X) will put to bed once and for all this LCS nonsense.

You want to be tossed around in a planing hull in the Atlantic? Be my guest ...

You would be best to analyse what the Uniforms are saying about their needs to project force over the next few decades. They want many amphibious ships but smaller than the current size within the US Fleet. In a discussion with shipbuilders and designers the Commandant General of the Marines sees Marines deployed on Littoral Combat ships of the Day. Maybe different to current LCS design but the overall thrust was for a 350 ship Navy and within it smaller ships, fewer large CVN's, and to NOT include unmanned assets in the count.

                        • I could see some beancounter designating every torpedo a "Single use unmanned underwater drone with the ability to distroy selected targets in an asynchronious mannner" or some such, and claiming a 10 000 craft navy...
'He died who loved to live,' they'll say,
'Unselfishly so we might have today!'
                          Like hell! He fought because he had to fight;
He died that's all. It was his unlucky night.

Lots of difficult questions being asked at this event.

Past time we have such events like this, hopefully it will become a regular thing.
