  • [QUOTE=EUFighter;474212]While we have all been distracted by some other issues it seems the VARD mob have been busy with several new designs:

The VARD 7-312 is a 125m Logistic Supply vessel for projection and support of forces, amphibious operations and control, support of maritime special ops, and humanitarian assistance. It has amphibious/well deck capabilities and can accommodate up to 250 troops.

Not one for us as it seems to be aimed at Chile to replace their existing ship.

Not to nit pick too much, I think the VARD-310 is ear marked for Chile, while the VARD- 312 is matching our length at 125m and the beam of 22.00m just fits into the Cork Dry dock by 0.3m. I'd say there showing their underwear to us.!!

Why would we need an Ice strengthened hull? Or pay for a design with that?

Don't have to add ice strengthening unless you want a future capability. Once a hull is sorted the rest is specification. Being able to operate in Arctic regions in summer doesn't mean the vessel is over strengthened. Llyods standard rules operate at a higher strength requirement than thin skinned combat vessels, so for world voyaging they will add certain contingencies. The States shipping company vessels, in their day, travelled to PORT CHURCHILL in Hudson Bay and Montreal in winter, all passing through Bergy Bits seaways.

        • As a contingency, having a certain level of ice strengthening would be no disadvantage. Given this vessel is designed for Humanitarian aid, we cannot assume that we would only be needed to assist in warmer waters, as is currently the case. What if, for example our neighbours to the north had another volcano inspired situation in the wrong time of the year? Being without this strengthening can limit our movements in the western atlantic to a line quite far south, at certain times of the year.
Still a fine vessel with interesting capabilities.
The 312 does however specify Antarctic waters. Maybe South Africa has a similar requirement?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Artistic license or a commercial prompt. We have seen some with an Agusta - 139 on board. Our OPV's appear in their brochures.

              • I've followed the EPV/MRV vessel thread with interest since the early 2000's when someone in IMO tried to bait the media that the NS were looking to buy an Absalon class...

A number of interesting vessels have been proposed in these pages, and the NS is quoted as knowing what specs it would like to see. However, does anyone know whether their requirements point more towards patrol/security or logistic functions? Knowing which of those is the primary role will dictate the type of vessel acquired. So from a souped down Type 31e in primarily patrol/security scenario, to one of the Vard designs shown above in a logistic role. Just my 2 cents from someone who knows very little about naval matters.

                • What the NS wants it may not get but it is likely to be substantial more than the ability to carry 4 TEUs

Yes, you are right. What is needed is implied in the vessel's designation as a Multi role vessel. Ideally it should be able to function as tasked , in Command functions , HADR, Fleet support/replenishment, acute hospital/aid functions, surveillance/interdiction roles, transport/ insertion roles, remote unit launch and recovery both aerial and sub-sea, sufficient bollard pull to aid most vessels etc. etc.

                    • Something from Fassmer...

Ecuador’s Astilleros Navales Ecuatorianos EP (ASTINAVE EP) shipyard has selected Fassmer’s MPV70 MKII design for the Armada del Ecuador new multipurpose combat vessel program. As informed, the vessel will be built by ASTINAVE EP in Guayaquil with design, engineering, technical support and material packages from Fassmer. The MPV70 MKII is part of a family of […]

How would that low section handle Irish sea states?

Easy answer. It would ship it all.

It's a single task ship waiting to break in two.

                              • Or it could be a new way to launch RHIB's , flood the mid section and float the RHIB out .
