The issue Saracen rocket pouches dont have the straps to convert them into a daysack.they were seen as unneccessary with the issue of a separate patrol pack.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

I've just started looking for a new main rucksack for myself.

I'm trying to get my hands on a Saracen in OD as well but can't find one, i've sent off an email to Lowe Alpine to see if i can get it from them directly.

I was also looking at the Vulcan and the Karrimor Sabre but then i came across these:

        TT Field Pack:

        TT Pathfinder:

They look like great packs, especially the Field Pack which has MOLLE all over the place.

They're made by a German company called Tatonka. Anyone have any experience with them?

Both cost about the same as the Karrimor Sabre. (Around the €250 range)

A cool little feature i noticed with both packs is the the built in whistle in the shoulder straps. That goes for nearly all of they're packs.

Some more pics of the TT Field Pack:

In case you haven't noticed, this is the "Good Backpacks" thread....

Both those packs are actually smaller then the issue Bergen by about 20litres.

I'm not arguing what they are, just wondering why you think you need it!

                  I don't.

I was just looking around for good packs and spotted those two and thought i'd put it on here for others to see.

I wanted to get a bergen sized pack that was in good enough condition to actually be useful, unlike the issued bergens which have half the buckles missing.

I just got myself a second hand PLCE bergen in very good condition for 70 quid

The reason reservists can justify investing in some (not all gucci kit) is that those of us who will (or already are...) in past the decade mark, will actually spend a reasonable amount of time on teh ground.

I find as a rule of thumb that you can buy most of the really useful comfort enhancing things for your civvy outdoor sports i.e. hillwalking, mountaineering, kayaking, trail running etc support a fair amount of investment in, socks, baselayers, boots, hydration systems, sporks (light my fire sporks are f***ing great), cooking systems and so on.

For the odd specialised bit of military kit, i.e. packs and webbing it comes down to the convenience of not using pooled kit that has to be unpacked and handed back into stores (when it's made available in the first place!) as much as anything else.

Yes, we do all suffer from the gucci eye sometimes - and not just when we're young and dumb.

As an old and dumb weekend warrior I try and write down five reasons why I need a particular piece of kit.
If I can't find them I'll put the money towards one of my sporting endeavours instead.

did the commando speed march in scotland last year with a Saracen

found it night on impossible to get one, they are not in manufacture at the minute and the line is only reopened with an order of 100 or more - from my research.

opted for the Berghaus Crusader instead, fantastic bergan and almost identical to the Saracen. 215 euro.

now i just need a battle vest to wear with it instead of the PLCE webbing.

"No, sir. He's a sergeant, and they don't deserve no respect at all, sir. I should know. They're cunning and artful, if they're any good. I wouldn't mind if he was an officer, sir. But sergeants are clever."

It's almost grat season, so I'm scouting around for a few nice things to buy myself as an early Christmas present. A decent daysack is one thing I've been looking at for a bit. Ideally it'd be a 40-45 litre bag, with non-divided main compartment, floated lid if possible, and in OG. These two caught my eye this morning

Have you guys any suggestions for other daysacks that fit the spec.?

Has anyone any experience of using one of the bags I've mentioned?
