Its been 60yrs since 9 Irish soldiers were killed on patrol near the town of Niemba in the Belgian #congo.

On 08th Nov 1960 the 11 man @UNPeacekeeping patrol led by Lt Kevin Gleeson was ambushed by Baluba tribesmen on a bridge over the Luweyeye River.

#Niemba60 In the aftermath of the ambush, Operation Shamrock was launched. Its objective was to capture the Baluba tribesmen injured in the Niemba Ambush from Manono Hospital.
