  • The Bushies are replacing the Command & Control variant of the armoured Pinzgauers, if the DF statement was not enough the image released show a large number of antenna consistent with this mission. The Bushie has a large internal volume complete with A/C that is more suitable than one of the NZLAV's. In order to get anywhere near the same volume the aft roof would need to be raised on the NZLAV. Technically possible but would be very expensive and the cost of the project is not a lot when considering the equipment installed. The price of the new vehicle is around €1m, and it should serve 30+ years.

The only annoying thing is that we have not offered NZ$30m for the job lot and given them to the Cav boys as replacements for their retired AML & Scorpion vehicles.

So begs the obvious question how do they compare to the Piranha 111 (including our upgrade programme)??
An army is power. Its entire purpose is to coerce others. This power can not be used carelessly or recklessly. This power can do great harm. We have seen more suffering than any man should ever see, and if there is going to be an end to it, it must be an end that justifies the cost. Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain

Even then with a full fuel load flying a LAV in the NZ context was pointless anyway due to range and safety considerations.

OK. I get it. You know more than the NZDF from the comfort of your comfy chair. Good for you.
I've plenty of experience operating armoured vehicles on multiple overseas trips. The NZ DF have a very long list of expensive equipment procurements that have turned out to be complete ****ups and white elephants in a short space of time.

Yes, but the important question is, just how big is your penis?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

If you had digested what I wrote previously, I was quite specific that the early to mid noughties the NZ Govt bought equipment against the advice of the NZDF, yes they were White Elephants. However, that is approaching 2 decades ago. Since the re-equipment process has started since DWP 15 and in fact formulated in the earlier DWP 2010, with a complete restructuring of defence procurement policy and procedure, they have not put a foot wrong - no white elephants. Every project is well thought through, coherent and now well funded. Thus I firmly reject the premise that a period of poor acquisition making years ago has any relevancy now in 2020. Furthermore it was not the NZDF who selected those "white elephant" all those years ago it was the MoD with interference from the DPM&C, with quite a lot of skullduggery from certain elements within the Army who because funding was drying up, ran a campaign to undermine the Air Force and Navy to kill off there major projects to save their own.

The Bushmaster is replacing the Armoured Pinzer not the LAVIII which an idiotic government of the day bought 32 more LAV's than they needed, even when it was under going massive defence cuts. As you are someone who has been involved in armoured vehicles you clearly would understand that their are the different tools for the job in the different situations within a complex modern Army instructed to do everything from local civil defence emergencies through to Tier 1 classified Special Operations. With decent funding going to the Army we now do not have to compromise with just two classes of protected mobility. We can have the right tool for the right scenario. If it is excess to our needs we get rid of it. QAMR has traditionally has three Squadrons. There is no need for a 4th or 5th thus those 32 LAV's on the block are excess to future needs and the money saved on that can be spent elsewhere on real transformational projects like our component of the FVEY's network enable army. LAV's assigned to QAMR have their important place in the order of battle for Chp VII and above type scenarios per fire support and manoevuer, and we will still retain 75 for that purpose. Likewise there is also a place for lighter protected mobility assets in supporting roles such as Bushmasters, HMT Supacats and even Pinzers assigned to a wide group of other users within the Army, not just QAMR.

Beca Applied Technologies Ltd, with the support of specialist naval architecture company Vard Marine Inc, have been appointed by the New Zealand Ministry of Defence as the Technical Support Partner to the Southern Ocean Patrol Vessel (SOPV) project.

There is an expectation that a variant of the Canadian Harry DeWolf Class AOPS will get the nod as the RNZN vessel will align as a production follow on with the completion of the current RCN/CCG AOPS drumbeat. That the DeWolf uses the Lockheed Martin 330CMS architecture which has gone into the Anzac Class and is essentially an evolved VARD 7-100 ICE design, with design lineage connected to the current VARD 85's makes the DeWolf variant an easier pathway into service and sustainment.

HMNZS Aotearoa Departing Devonport Naval Base for the First Time December 4, 2020.

The first of the upgraded Anzac frigates is now heading home across the Pacific from Victoria BC so it seems likely that an AOR hock up and an escort into Devonport might be on the cards.

We will have to send Mikey Joe O'Shea down to teach them how to speak properly.

The bimbo blonde host and the bimbo blonde reporter on the ship are particularly bad and quite rightly should be mocked. They are simply what we call "bogans" which is becoming more common as all things "Westie" (West Auckland) becomes more culturally dominant amongst the younger generation. Think Antipodean Chav's crossed with rednecks!

The male host is the nephew of the actress Julie Christie and is ex BBC and been on NZ screens for years. I wouldn't necessarily tar him with the same brush.

Kiwi accents are just as varied as other english speaking countries, like them it all depends on post code, school and region. Like in Australia it is the the awful broad accents of Bogans which deservedly get paned.

However, what is worse than the the way those two speak is the sheer dumbing down of the whole ship, its purpose and its experience. Probably why MSM TV news is 25% of what it was 25 years ago audience wise. Twenty five years ago an old school journalist would have imparted information, insight and have put the vessel and its crew at the heart of the story. This item was all about her hangin out on the boat!

                            • It's got lots of stairs apparently.
Was the storm only the worst storm ever because she was aboard and redecorated the guest cabin, involuntarily?
I wouldn't normally suggest this on other Social Media platforms, but the host has an unusually short skirt for a news presenter.
As for the accent, I have recently become familiar with the work of young Benee. Great music, but mostly mumbling and growling. That's what the young folk like these days I guess.

We have them here too. So many reports aboard ship lead to the inevitable shot of smiley bimbo either "steering" the ship, shouting "ahoy" or peering through a porthole or lifering. Or poor Derek Davis (R.I.P) who ate his way around South East Asia on L.E. Niamh.(Respect though to the Winning Streak blonde Lady, who stayed behind the camera when filming the doc about the horrendous med operation).

                              • NZ has a new Minister of Defence and is of Maori descent the Hon. Peeni Henare. Henare's grandfather was Lt.Col Sir James Clendon Tau Henare the Commander of the famous 27th Maori Batt that fought with 2NZEF at El Elamain and Monte Cassino during WW2. So fairly safe pair of hands.

With every new DefMin a Briefing to the Incoming Minister is produced. This one other than the usual section 6&9 security blank-outs littered here and there is quite interesting and has a fairly widespread reading of the global geo-political situation.
