                1887

Francis Ledwidge was born in Slane, Co. Meath. A poet and nationalist, he fought in the Great War in the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. KIA 31st July 1917.

"I joined the British Army because she stood between Ireland and an enemy of civilisation and I would not have her say that she defended us while we did nothing but pass resolutions".

Someone should hang that quote on the wall of Leinster House. With a little paraphrasing, it is as relevant today as then.

                The Call to Ireland
                by Francis Ledwidge

We have fought so much for the nation
                In the tents we helped to divide;
Shall the cause of our common fathers
                On our earthstones lie denied?
For the price of a field we have wrangled
While the weather rusted the plow,
' twas yours and 'twas mine and 'tis ours yet
And it's time to be fencing it now.

                1914

The information gathered from this landing was used to plan the successful Allied landings in Morrocco, Sicily, Italy and Normandy.

Captain John Foote, who was serving as a Chaplain in the Canadian Army, earned a Victoria Cross at Dieppe by attending the wounded and dying in the open under fire. At the battle’s end he left the landing craft on which he would have sailed to safety and walked to the German positions to minister to the Allied prisoners.

The Battle of Crecy was fought in France. Outnumbered 3 to 1, the longbowmen of Edward III’s army decimated the French in a field not far from the Somme, where a British army would be decimated 570 years later.

Henry Flood, MP for Callan, killed James Agar, MP for Tulsk, in a duel. They should re-introduce this literal fighting of elections. The 18th century, when men were men and sheep were nervous. :D

                            1803

                            The British captured Robert Emmet.

It’s also Claudia Schiffer’s birthday. She was born in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Claudia models the latest in tactical swimwear in Belgian DPM. Where does she keep her survival tin.

I’d like to apologise for this gratuitous display of Fraulein Schiffer’s charms. Other sad bastards can see more at http://www.kmmod.com/cschiffer/galleries.htm
