Nukumaru, New Zealand during the Maori War. Captain Hugh Shaw of the 18th Foot (Royal Irish Regt), under heavy fire, led a patrol of four privates who had volunteered to accompany him, to within 30 yards of the Maori position, in order to rescue a soldier who was severely wounded. For this action he was awarded the Victoria Cross.
Shaw was born in Madras, India in 1839. He later rose to the rank of Maj-General and was a holder of the CB. He died in 1904 and is buried in Portsmouth. His VC is held in the National Army Museum Chelsea.
Shaw wasn't Irish but since he was in an Irish Regt at the time I feel he deserves a mention.
1918
8674 Cpl James McCarthy, 1st Bn Royal Irish Regt. Son of James and Johanna McCarthy, 24 College St, Clonmel, Co. Tipperary performed an act of bravery which cost him his life and earned him the Albert Medal.
An extract from "The London Gazette," dated 14th May, 1918, records the following:- Albert Medal in Gold. "On the 24th January, 1918, in Palestine, Corporal McCarthy was cleaning grenades in his quarters, when the fuse of one became ignited. He carried it out to throw it into a safe place, but, finding a number of men standing around, he realised that he could not throw it anywhere without injuring his comrades. He clasped the grenade in both hands and held it close to his side. The grenade exploded, killing Corporal McCarthy, who by his devoted courage saved his comrades from serious injury."
He is buried in Jerusalem War Cemetery, Israel.
