    1798

    The 1798 Rebellion began.

    1915

The German Army launched an attack along a front running from Mauser Ridge to the north of Ypres down to the village of Hooge. The 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt, part of 12th Brigade, 4th Division was holding trenches near Shell Trap Farm (later Mouse Trap Farm). This was the start of the final phase of the 2nd Battle of Ypres and became known as the Battle of Bellewaarde. The battalion’s War Diary gives an account of the night’s action.

2.a.m, Trenches: Battalion stood to arms.
2:20.a.m, Trenches: The enemy, preceded by gas, attacked. A mild wind blowing from the north-east brought the full volume of the gas on that part of the line occupied by the battalion. Although every step regarding the use of respirators and sprayers was taken, many of all ranks were overcome by gas. Shell Trap Farm, which had been held by 2 platoons of the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was taken by the enemy, thus enabling them to enfilade our position of the line, which they worked down bombing us with hand grenades. The enemy took our trenches down as far as the right of the "King's Own", only a few men of our battalion now being left. Here the attack was checked, the enemy holding the ground he had taken., two platoons of "A" Company, under the command of Lieut. McKay, 4th Connaught Rangers, who were in support at point 'A' on map, held on until the following morning. Our casualties were 17 Officers and 378 other ranks, Approx.

62 Irish soldiers of the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regt were killed in action or died of wounds on this day.

A glorious blow for Irish freedom by Republican heroes - the Provos learned their lessons well.

Charles Haughey and Niall Blaney were arrested for conspiracy to import arms.
Would Haughey have been able to become head of govt in any other democracy after an arms trial?

There's a school of thought which maintains that Jones' death was the catalyst for 2 Para's victory - not in the sense of inspring his men but by the fact that Maj Keeble was actually a far superior CO who allowed much more initiative to subordinate CO's than Jones did.

There are many other events like this from the War of Independence. They may be pretty rough events but thats the history of our state and the Irish Army was made up by many of these old IRA men when the state was founded.

How many civilians have the US killed in 'liberating' Iraq or how many situations have occurred out there that would be just as bad as the one mentioned above?

Would Haughey have been able to become head of govt in any other democracy after an arms trial?
                Yes. He was acquitted.

I've read that too. 2 Para was quite lucky in that they basically bluffed the remaining Argentines into surrendering. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they gave them the opportunity to surrender before slaughtering even more of the poor bastards.

Lads the ins and outs of the War of Independence is on another thread. Keep that argument there.

                                1651

General Ireton, Oliver Cromwell's son-in-law and commander of the army in Ireland, laid siege to Limerick city. He captured the city in October and died of plague shortly after. Further proof that Limerick is bad for the health. :D

                                1738

George III was born. He was the King of Great Britain and Ireland from 1760 until his death in 1820, and Elector of Hanover from 1815. Unfortunately he was mad as a hatter for most of that time and his son, the future George IV, was Prince Regent for long periods.

                                1798

Government troops marched south out of Gorey, Co. Wexford meeting rebels from Carrigrew at Tubberneering. The rebels won and the troops withdrew north. The rebels occupied Gorey.

                                1820

                                Henry Grattan died.

                                1833

Garnet Woseley was born in Goldenbridge, Co. Dublin. He was the most successful of the Victorian generals.

                                1857

In Benares, India Irishman, Sgt Major Peter Gill of the Ludhiana Regt, volunteered with two other men, to rescue an officer and his family from their bungalow, where they were threatened by mutineers, and bring them to the safety of barracks. Later that day he saved the life of a CQMS by decapitating his attacker and twice saved the life of a Major.

                                1941

Kaiser Bill died in Holland. As Wilhelm II von Hohenzollern, he was Emperor of Germany from 1888 to 1918.

                                1963

British Minister of War John Profumo resigned. He was shagging a bird named Christine Keeler. Unfortunately, Christine was also shagging the Soviet military attaché.

                                1982

Israel and the PLO exchange artillery and rocket fire across the Israeli/Lebanese border.

                                1999

NATO commanders met with Yugoslav army officers in Macedonia to arrange for the withdrawal of 40,000 Serbian troops from Kosovo.

Today is the first day so far on which I have no battlefield casualty to record.
