Angry 12396 Pte James Cassidy
1916

12396 Pte James Cassidy, 1st Bn Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Executed by firing squad aged 38. He was Irish.

He was 39, I have a copy of all the papers relating to the case. I've been trying to find descendants of his for years, trying to discover where he came from, so I can tell his family "He was not a coward" He'd been wounded twice in action in 1915 and recieved a medal on 25th May 1915.

In June 1916 a shell exploded near a latrine he was using in the front line. After he dug himself out of the mud, shit and clay he wandered around the front line for two days before being picked up, dazed and confused in the French sector. His officers pleaded for his life and told of his fighting spirit and how this was an unusual incident for the man. The Brits shot him anyway - what was another Irishman to them?

It was not just irishmen who were "shot at dawn"
Anyone not of the establishment, or officer class, were considered fair game for execution. Siegfried Sassoon was lucky to have been given the luxury of a hospital to treat the "battle exhaustion" from which he suffered, Privates in the same position were not so lucky.
