    1536

Anne Boleyn, Sir Francis Weston, William Brereton, Mark Smeaton, Sir Henry Norris and Lord Rochford (Anne’s brother, George) were tried for adultery, and treason. Anne and George were also tried for incest. They were caught up in the intrigues of Henry VIII’s court but the charges were almost certainly false. Nevertheless they were found guilty, with Lady Rochford testifying for the prosecution, and went to the headsman’s block in the Tower of London, the five men on May 17th, Anne two days later. Anne’s daughter Elizabeth, would eventually become Queen of England. Anne Boleyn’s cousin, Catherine Howard, had the bad luck to become the 5th wife of Henry VIII. In 1542 she met the same fate as her cousin. And, poetic justice, Lady Rochford went to the block at the same time.

    1702

The War of the Spanish Succession began. Despite the name it was fought mostly between the French and the British and largely in Belgium. The Royal Regiment of Ireland took part in most of the battles of which Blenheim is the most famous. The British General in Command was John Churchill who got a Dukedom out of it, and became the Duke of Marlborough. He was an ancestor of Winston Churchill.

    1536

The five men accused of adultery with Anne Boleyn were beheaded in the Tower of London.

    1650

Cromwell's troops besieging Clonmel launch a second assault on the breach in the town’s north wall. The defenders allow the troops through the breach into a barricaded lane where heavy losses were inflicted on the Roundheads. A figure of 1500 dead is often quoted though the bodies have never been located. Despite this victory the defence of the town was on it’s last legs.

    1880

Charles Stewart Parnell was elected Chairman of the Irish Parliamentary Party.

    1974

33 people died when Loyalist terrorists detonated four car bombs in Dublin and Monaghan. In Dublin the first bomb of three exploded about 5.30pm in Parnell St, the second a few minutes later in Talbot St and the third in South Leinster St. An hour and a half later on North Road, Monaghan a car bomb exploded outside Archie Harpers Bar in the town. This last was probably designed to draw the security forces away from the terrorist’s escape route back to the North. Amazingly the Gardai and successive spineless Irish governments have failed to properly investigate the atrocity, quite possibly because there is circumstantial evidence that the bombings were carried out by proxy on behalf of the British security forces. The dead are listed below.

Anne Boleyn, second wife of Henry VIII, was beheaded in the Tower of London.

    1870

At a meeting in Dublin, Isaac Butt inaugurated the Home Rule movement in a speech demanding an Irish parliament for local affairs. On this platform he was elected in 1871 for Limerick, and found himself at the head of an Irish Home Rule party of fifty-seven members.

    1935

    T. E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, died from head injuries sustained six days earlier, in a motorcycle accident in Dorset.

Thomas Edward Lawrence was born in Wales in 1888 and naturally, as he was to be a great soldier, he was of Irish extraction. His father was Sir Thomas Chapman who abandoned his wife and daughters on the family estate in Co. Westmeath and eloped with the girls' Governess, Sarah Junner. Sarah was the illegitimate child of a man named Lawrence, thus the new family name.

Thomas studied archaeology at Oxford and worked in Mesopotamia and Palestine before the war. Obtaining a commission at the start of the war, Lawrence worked in Military Intelligence in Cairo before becoming Liaison Officer with the Arab Revolt. From Saudi Arabia to Syria his Arab guerrilas tied down the Turkish forces that could have been used against the British forces in Palestine and Mesopotamia.

In 1919 Lawrence worked with the British delegation at the Paris Peace conference where he promoted the cause of Arab independence, unsuccessfully as it turned out. About this time too an American journalist, named Lowell Thomas, made him famous with the British public, who had never heard of his exploits during the war.

By 1922 Lawrence was a civilian, living in Oxford and writing his books The Seven Pillars of Wisdom and Revolt in the desert. He decided to enlist in the RAF under an assumed name but was detected and discharged after four months. He then enlisted in the Tank Corps and transferred into the RAF in 1926 and was posted to India until 1928. He left the RAF in March 1935 and hoped to continue writing at his home in Dorset, a career cut short by his fatal motorbike accident.

    1982

On 19th May 1982, the SAS suffered 18 casualties when a Sea King helicopter crashed while cross-decking troops from HMS Hermes to HMS Intrepid. 22 men were killed in all and 9 survived. Three Irishmen were killed one NI, one Donegal, one Tipperary.

    1798

    The 1798 Rebellion began.

    1819

The future Queen Victoria was born in London.

    1915

The German Army launched an attack along a front running from Mauser Ridge to the north of Ypres down to the village of Hooge. The 2nd Bn Royal Irish Regt, part of 12th Brigade, 4th Division was holding trenches near Shell Trap Farm (later Mouse Trap Farm). This was the start of the final phase of the 2nd Battle of Ypres and became known as the Battle of Bellewaarde. The battalion’s War Diary gives an account of the night’s action.

2.a.m, Trenches: Battalion stood to arms.
2:20.a.m, Trenches: The enemy, preceded by gas, attacked. A mild wind blowing from the north-east brought the full volume of the gas on that part of the line occupied by the battalion. Although every step regarding the use of respirators and sprayers was taken, many of all ranks were overcome by gas. Shell Trap Farm, which had been held by 2 platoons of the 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers, was taken by the enemy, thus enabling them to enfilade our position of the line, which they worked down bombing us with hand grenades. The enemy took our trenches down as far as the right of the "King's Own", only a few men of our battalion now being left. Here the attack was checked, the enemy holding the ground he had taken., two platoons of "A" Company, under the command of Lieut. McKay, 4th Connaught Rangers, who were in support at point 'A' on map, held on until the following morning. Our casualties were 17 Officers and 378 other ranks, Approx.

A glorious blow for Irish freedom by Republican heroes - the Provos learned their lessons well.

Charles Haughey and Niall Blaney were arrested for conspiracy to import arms.
Would Haughey have been able to become head of govt in any other democracy after an arms trial?

There's a school of thought which maintains that Jones' death was the catalyst for 2 Para's victory - not in the sense of inspring his men but by the fact that Maj Keeble was actually a far superior CO who allowed much more initiative to subordinate CO's than Jones did.

There are many other events like this from the War of Independence. They may be pretty rough events but thats the history of our state and the Irish Army was made up by many of these old IRA men when the state was founded.

How many civilians have the US killed in 'liberating' Iraq or how many situations have occurred out there that would be just as bad as the one mentioned above?

Would Haughey have been able to become head of govt in any other democracy after an arms trial?
    Yes. He was acquitted.

I've read that too. 2 Para was quite lucky in that they basically bluffed the remaining Argentines into surrendering. Or perhaps it would be more accurate to say that they gave them the opportunity to surrender before slaughtering even more of the poor bastards.

Lads the ins and outs of the War of Independence is on another thread. Keep that argument there.
