Economic downturn my ass. Blame it squarely on the shoulders of former minister Willie O Dea who was incapable, or unwilling to make a decision without first employing teams of consultants. If he couldn't drive it down o Connell street for his Paddys Day parade in Limerick, then it was of no interest to him.
There was plenty of money available when the 30 year rule still applied, and the NS were quite ready to order too. The Build cost would also have been smaller.

Just had a look at the tender docs, we should had 2 x new OPVs and 1 x new EPV in service 2 years ago.

Ship P61. by ohefin, on Flickr

Seen on boards.. Does P61 carry an air search radar?
British officer: You're seven minutes late, Mr. Collins.
Michael Collins: You've kept us waiting 700 years. You can have your seven minutes.

[As the British flag comes down]

Michael Collins: So that's what all the bother was about.

I think it was an option on the tender

Nope, not in that pic anyway - one of the early renderings did show one and there was talk of it here, but lately it appears as though it wont be so equipped, at least to begin with.

May show up if/when UAV ops begin.

The Kelvin Hughes SharpEye surface radar antenna is visible though and the usual compliment of UHF/VHF/HF/SAT antennas too

Of course it is. The week I have no access to internet other than via mobile....Typical.

PDF from Kelvin Hughes on their SharpEye system: http://www.kelvinhughes.com/upload/p...ures/naval.pdf

Nice performance & specs - gigabit ethernet, open architecture, camera slew to cue, helicopter control and recovery modes, interfaces with FCS etc.

It may be that the NS decides it's already enough for UAV ops.

Any info on the optical sensor fit Goldie? It looks like a neater more modern unit than the Roisin/Niamh.

Ultra Electronic (radamec) 2500 was mentioned before, but it looks more like a Sagem Vigy MM... but difficult to tell for sure.

Yeah, spotted it active at 6.40pm, then nothing for the evening.
