Not really a problem, for many years British Rail locos carried the names of Royal Navy ships, some of which were still in use, so there is a precedent, even if it's not direct.

Not neutral enough, that was the great thing about the Celtic Chick names, interesting, but sufficiently mystical, like the end of the rainbow.

      • The new names are playwrights not 1916 leaders military leaders. Its still better than girls names but maybe they will get bigger warships with appropriate names in the future.

          I didn't realise England had a navy.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

But having two ships with the same name would be a problem .

Not neutral enough for who? If anyone has a problem with the State or the DF honouring the executed 1916 leaders maybe they should book a one-way ticket on the Jonathan Swift.

Didn't we already name every barracks in the Curragh after them?

                  • Childers is too political given he was executed in the civil war for possession of a pistol. Using the 1916 leaders is an army thing, no point in the NS replicating what the army has already done.

                      • There are 2 Erskine Childers in Irish history, if anyone had a problem with 1 just say it was the other 1

                        • The ship should be named Homer. His great works inspired the great Irish writers and his tales involve ships and armies that have enthralled men for ages. He also served in the military and don't our own Irish legends recount tales of the children of Dana who sailed from his land to eventually settle in an area near Tallaght. Why we could claim old Homer as part of the Irish diaspora.

Moving down the road of Dead presidents would be fine until you get to De Valera, again not universally acceptable because of his political stances,

Brilliant give 99% of the Irish population equate the name Homer with Homer Simpson of cartoon fame, next in line Peter Griffin......

Not one would be suitable in my book just as no Taoiseach or indeed any politician would be. Who was responsible for naming L.E. Beckett etc.?

Some lay it at the door of the former minister, others suggest it came from within the department, other the former FOCNS.

I know L.E. Niamh was named by a schools competition.
