What would you do to change the SD1's?
I knew a simple soldier boy.....
Who grinned at life in empty joy,
Slept soundly through the lonesome dark,
And whistled early with the lark.

In winter trenches, cowed and glum,
With crumps and lice and lack of rum,
He put a bullet through his brain.
And no one spoke of him again.

You smug-faced crowds with kindling eye
Who cheer when soldier lads march by,
Sneak home and pray you'll never know
The hell where youth and laughter go.

The British Army new FAD isn't hugely different in design.

Personally I don't think anything needs to be radically changed, maybe the cut (but it isn't tailored), sizing and availability.

The Collar. New Arms drill is going to do the same damage to collar badges as the 303 used to.

Catch-22 says they have a right to do anything we can't stop them from doing.

And the jean collar of the Naval Rating uniform , leaves an oily stain on the white trim .

The tunic, the shirt and tie, very dated looking, get rid of same. I'd be looking at the closed collar as used by 2Cav ceremonial no shirt or tie required Royal Marines / US Marines style get rid of the belt and pockets on the tunic and shorten the tunic , get rid of that horrible overlap at the front. Get rid of the beret as a dress item, peakers only. Collar badges worn on closed collar as per BA Guards regiments etc.

White belt to be worn ceremonially.

That would look gucci as hell but there's about a snowballs chance of that happening unfortunately.

That is RM dress blues, they also have the shirt, tie etc for less formal wear.

If we look back to historical Irish SD1, we are looking at closed collars yes, but also breaches and knee high boots (or battle dress) aren't we?

If we were to keep the current, maybe get rid of the cloth belt.

It does need to change, the Bands and 2 Cav have changed theirs, there have been multiples trials of non suitable other uniform bits,The contract out there for the current No.1s is probably so out of date it could easily be changed , savings to be made on shirts across the board. Officers should change as well. get rid of Sam brownes and brown shoes...'George Boots' more fitting.

If it was an idea from within the top brass, money would be found.!

Aye, you're likely right but I can't see it being a priority is all.

It's the difference in cost between buying say 90 uniforms for bands & 40 for 2Cav and around 12000 for the whole army (including RDF).

there was a paper excercise carried out some years ago what could be saved on items that could be deleted from the scale off issue, stuff that was never used and only ever turned up on kit inspections, don't have a copy of the issue to hand, buy top of the pile was things like greatcoats....under wear, swimming trunks, towels, combs , hair brushes, razors, tooth brushes,Knife fork, spoon, may be gone now but these were a huge waste of money in that every one in the DF got them on enlistment and were never used except for kit inspections.Shoes were another item, given there were three types of boot on issue to any individual!

Its quite do able if someone reviewd the current set up.

The Sam Browne is used to hold the scabbard for ceremonial. If withdrawn then a sword belt would have to be used instead.

As used by Naval Officers already!

I had thought of that specific unit but didn't want to allude to it for various reasons.

Given we even took the 'man bag' for our Presidential Escort Uniforms might as well go all the way now.

Definetly a different shade of green required and the colours shouldn't be chosen by the colour blind cnut that did the presidential escort ones... and none of that red crap either.Would suggest a green collar akin to the Green used in ARW Berets over a colour similar to that current in use in SD No 1s.

The green from the pipers tunic would look well as an overall uniform colour.
