tell the media that because of a lack of ongoing operational experience, a major cut in exercises and no access to large training areas, the Irish Army is becoming non-effective.

ask journalists whether they think that pretty much every other Army in Europe trains on such large areas - and it they don't have them at home they move entire forces across the Atlantic to get to them - because other European governments have money burning a hole in their pockets and can't think what else to spend it on.

you have a senior Irish political Journalist on this site, ask him whether he thinks everyone else does this because they are bored...

Ah yes, "Disband de Army, Joe, I'm tellin you, Joe" - that perennial great idea from the Irish public - cause another few thousand job losses, sure it's not like there aren't enough people out of work as it is.

If at first you don't succeed, then call in an airstrike.

Sad but true. Those of us in the DF would love to avail of the training opportunities listed above.Problem is the public don't give two shits about defence. In their eyes we are useless because we have never fought in a war and we take up funding they reckon would be better spent elsewhere.
            Until..........
Their banks run dry of cash 'cos the dissidents/criminal gangs rob all the cash deliveries,
They have no jobs because no multinational company will set up in a country where the government can't guarantee stability and security,
Their houses are flooded and no one can evac them,
They are snowed in and no one can evac them,
and any other ATCP/ATCA task that the DF does or can do doesn't get done because we were disbanded.

Yup.The DF is like paying for an insurance policy.Nobody wants to have to pay during the good times but are goddamn glad they did when the SHTF.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

would it? Mick doesn't seem to think so, the rest of the media jumped on the stuff about UNDOF like a tramp on hot chips - they are interested in defence stories/issues, and not to just to say 'close down de army joe..'.

with the the greatest of respect, all this 'the public doesn't care' stuff is a convenient fiction to cover for a lack of fight and acceptance of failure - it also happens to be very convenient belief for Politicians to propogate so that Defence accepts its place at the back of the queue for the parish pump.

The DF press office has to take its share of blame here. The best it can come out with to stimulate the public interest is
                • Private x and trooper Y are competing in this weekends bogball/stickball/eggball/ girlie stickball all Ireland final,
                • Cpl z returning from UN mission seeing his 3 week old baby for the first time (it happens in many jobs, not just defence
                • gnr Y is going overseas for the first time, his mammy is worried he may fall and scratch his elbow and she won't be there to kiss it better
                • Lt Mary Anne is off overseas where she will .. gasp... be in charge of up to 30 MEN! Even though she doesn't make tea or iron for any of them!
                • Here is a photo of the minister looking at something green. We don't know what it is either, we are too long working in an office.
                • An/the air corps aircraft took lovely photos last week. Aren't they pretty.
                • Something amazing of a military nature is happening at 2pm today. All the mainstream media should go to see this once in a lifetime event. Oh, its 3.30pm now. You missed it. Oh well.

                Etc.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Mick does a lot of good stories on the DF, and it's a red top (no offence!)

And the spin on the story from some sources/media is, why are they there? Why do we have an army? Pull them out!

Ropebag, no offence but do you live and work in Ireland?
Because if you do its a very different one from the rest of us

''Coveney confirms more Irish troops to be sent to Golan Heights''

Seems the mission shall continue but the troops will be mostly based at Camp Ziouani, on the Israeli side of the area of separation.

#oops meant to stick this in Defence Forces Deployment to UNDOF

Is there really a need to go as far as Canada. Anywhere in Eastern Europe would have some very big open training plains.

With the associated political difficulties. The people of mainland Europe are a bit funny about having foreign armies having war games on their turf when it was in living memory when most of them saw real wars taking place there.

Poland doesn't have a problem with the Brits unless things have changed

Are they as pleased to see HEER Leopard II advancing across the European Lowlands? The British spent millions each year repairing the lands their armoured vehicles ploughed up when they were BAOR.

The locals may not like it and I can understand why when you hear some of the stories from when BAOR went rampaging through quiet German villages in Challies at 2 am and took half the village with them on their way through. But the Governments of the likes of Germany, Poland and Estonia, for example, seem to have no problem with you waging ww3 in one of their big fields provided you don't rock up to their door empty handed.

Hopefully they get us another mission on the go.

Sitting around for years waiting for a trip is poxy.
