The first Naval Force to be part of a UN peacekeeping mission (UNIFIL Maritime Task Force) has been deployed since October 2006 upon request of the Lebanese Government to assist the Lebanese Navy in securing the territorial waters and to help prevent the unauthorized entry of arms or related material by sea into Lebanon.Since then Germany, Italy, France and Belgium have by rotation assumed Maritime Task Force Command. On the 1st of December 2009 I assumed Command of the MTF for the next six months on behalf of Italy.
"Well, stone me! We've had cocaine, bribery and Arsenal scoring two goals at home. But just when you thought there were truly no surprises left in football, Vinnie Jones turns out to be an international player!" (Jimmy Greaves)!"
If it were to go ahead, I'd presume they'd send one of the new P60's or possibly Eithne?
not only would i imagine the NS wanting to send their newest, most capable ship on their debut, but that Babcock would be very happy to see their wares being advertised so competantly...
now Babcock aren't going to be interested in funding the NS's €80-a-day 'doing your job' allowance, but the UK - for that is who gets Babcocks tax reciepts, as well as who is affected by piracy, and could do with having a FF freed up - is going to be happy to make life as easy as possible for the operation to go ahead. which means Log support and whatever freebees it can offer...
of course, Op Atalanta also has an MPA and SF componant. if only Ireland had MPA or SF....
not really a runner though is it - sail a ship and crew half way around the world on the NS's international debut so it it can combat any pirate threat within half a days journey of some exquisite beach-front resort...
So.Just to speculate. What kind of assets could we see deployed?
Ship.Check.
ARW boarding teams.Probably('Cos the navy don't do SMG's)
Shore based NSE??Possibly.
Be good to see our NS getting to do OPS of this kind.Good transferable skills also for use in our waters.
We've got Vikings in CB. use them, crap table manners, no people skills, let them keep anything they find on the pi rates boats and they will be happy to do it on a commission basis.
The NS have wanted to be involved in this from the outset, but DF HQ always blocked it.(i.e Army).
Interesting that it is only happening now that there are a few more voices not wearing green at the top table.
Anyone wanna place bets on the Air Corps going overseas too, though perhaps not with any aircraft?
Interesting idea,it would be a good first move if we were ever to get suitable assets for operating overseas in a meaningful manner, to at least, send observers to see what's required...

What about funding the rest from the foreign aid budget ?? !! ...
Considering the mission of EU NAVFOR is to protect World Food Programme ships delivering aid to Somalia it should be, I cant see where they are going to find a few million spare in this years defence budget to fund the fuel bill for such a deployment.
Well, using that logic, maybe we should withdraw all troops from overseas operations?
On a completely connected note, when is our commitment to UNIFIL up for renewal? Perhaps after 30 odd years of maintaining the status quo someone is considering sending irish forces on a mission where they may actually make a difference in the short, and long term?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.
