  • One of the projects that was supposed to be done within the first 12 months of the WP hasn't even started four years later. WTF.
    It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
    It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
    It was a new age...It was the end of history.
    It was the year everything changed.

        Like... theres your gap analysis wtf why bother putting this document out at all .

        ( in actual fact what am I missing here ... why put this out - what new fact has been slipped in there -I see the EDF mentioned )

        • Many years ago I did a final year thesis for the subject I was then studying. I met with my thesis supervisor once at the early stages of my research.
          It involved lots of graphs, no context cut and paste from related publications, and rounded off with a verbatim interview I.did with someone working in an area of the topic being read.
          I completed it in a 36 hour cram, having spent 2 years compiling the related information.
          It read like instructions translated from.mandarin chinese to english. But it contained in excess of the 15000 words that were required, and I submitted it just in time.
          It got me enough marks to successfully complete that subject.

          That's what this document is. Lots of rehashed words from earlier documents, rounded off with an unnecessary verbatim transcript from a dail committee, and the important part hidden in an annex, the results to date. The DoD can happily tick another "completed" box. Even though nothing substantial has been done other than rehashing more words and publishing them to a document.
          For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

              • If you read in depth then Project 39 - The Gap analysis - is holding up a huge amount of other projects including a bunch of RDF ones.

                Who wrote that sentence ? Who reviewed it ?

                Frequency of gaps ? Yes, we have quite frequent gaps in the areas already identified. What are the appropriate measures to address them ? Well up to now we've ostriched it, to be honest and thats likely to continue.

                • There are quite a number of RDF who have the required skill sets to fill those gaps. They have demonstrated their interest in the Defence org over their years of voluntary service. Most or some have completed their annual KPI's. Some have given more than the 48hrs required to be effective. Most have a good idea how the organisation works and would need little further training to fit right in with their PDF colleagues. We should offer them the opportunity to come into the PDF, hold their rank and perhaps figure out some way of marking their time towards a pension. That would fill the gaps the quickest way.

                    Wouldn't fill the gaps in pay which is 99% of the reason the gap exists in the first place , you'd be asking an IT specialist or whatever to take a 50% drop in pay

                      That National average annual pay is €39k. A 3* Pte after years is approx €34k. IT pay is high but I'm not just referring to them ie a specialist. There are problems just filling the average joe jobs. Those might cross over if the opportunity was there. No one I know is will to take a pay cut, no matter how much commitment they give the RDF/DF. The skills survey was carried a few years ago. It would not take long to update it and ask for expressions of interest from RDF members.

                      • Of course biggest problem with this, is RDF recruitment is not getting the numbers, applications appear to be down in places. That means RDF loose good member and we get smaller and problem grows....

                          If we converted 15% of the people who applied this year into attested RDF members it would be a huge improvement... there is nothing to stop RDF personnel undertaking most of the admin (and they probably should as the PDF resources aren’t there).

                          2 formations have people in uniform and training in less than 3 months (after close of applications)... others are 12+ months and they wonder why there is an issue!

                          • 15% is huge when the norm has been 5-8% over the last few years. I'm talking about using the Reserve to bolster the PDF as PDF. RDFRA and RDF members ask about serving overseas, if they can give that time why not enlist as per my previous post. DOD and mil authorities may look favourable on it.

                            • Point I’m making is that RDF recruitment is getting the numbers ... problem is getting them attested in some formations

                              Many of those who are leaving after attestation are doing so to join the PDF

                              Chances are some of those who remain (Who don’t want to join the PDF) will have specialist skills the DF need.

                              The DF has (reserve) personnel within its ranks that could (and in some cases have) fulfilled jobs that DF needs done (not all of them specialist by any stretch of the imagination). There is a resource there that can be used.

                              • Duties in most Bks, drivers, medical, IT helping with numbers during exercises. That's about it but members are willing to do more.
