  • Naval service recruitment

    Hi everyone,
My first post here so apologies if it's in the wrong section,
Just a quick question, with the impending floating out of L.E James Joyce and the upcoming unnamed vessel will the naval service be recruiting soon? Or are they operating from a panel to exhaust first ,similar to the Army?.

    Thanks for any info!

The new ships will see no need for any additional people. One ship goes out of service, its crew join the new ship.
Recruitment continues as normal, same as the army.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Thanks, I wasn't aware that some of the other vessels were being retired, is there a rough estimate for numbers on the panel? I've seen a figure of 180? to be trained so they will obviously be put into recruit platoons before any further enlistment?

Also slight tangent but how common is it to transfer from the NS to the army after initial training and service?

      Thanks.

The panels normal have a life span of one year, as they do in most public service appointments.

So would that be from the competition date ? I.E March/April or the date the candidates were informed they were on panels?

And would the NS have the same amount of people on panels?

Apologies for all the questions, I'm just trying to work out timings with my age and what not to apply to join

Panels last from the time the were formed , in this case after the last proceedure in place before the post was offered to the candidate. Until the candidate takes up the position formally he still holds that place on the panel. Failure to accept an offer would move someone to the end of the panel. So if the panel was activated for offering posts on 1st march, its active until the last day of the month preceding in the next 12 month cycle.

I'm unsure of the number they would have had for inclusion on a panl but its usually a representive proportion of the amount who applied and got through to the final stage vs the amount of positions on offer.

If you have a class of 30, 40 would be a realistic panel, if you planned to have two classes the panel would be larger say 70 -75, but bear in mind those remaining on the panel may not wish to take up a position if offered and if two classes were run in a calender year the panel will almost certainly be exhausted

              Thanks for the info,
So realistically it could be July at least before another recruitment competition,
Looks like lots of waiting ahead for me!
Better just keep the fitness levels up!

Also a final question is it entirely unheard of to get a transfer from the NS to the army? Or is it even possible?

The NS treat 26 year-old applicants with a certain amount of suspicion. I wouldn't mention your intention to use it as a back door into the army. They've been burned before.

Well I'm 25 at the moment so that's me suspicion free!! Haha
No obviously it's not something I'd actually mention I was more asking is it possible or has it been done?
Tbh I would just be delighted with a career in the df regardless of which branch!

It would be normal to be expected to serve your first term of engagment before even being considered for transfer.

Its a two way street , very few of the skills are interchangeable so the army may not even want you, and if your skills are specialist that the army might want you , the NS may not let you go.

No obligation to let you go. And should you make your intentions known before the end of the first term of engagement you may even find your self ' Services no longer required'

If you want Army join army but don't close the door for someone who may genuinely want to do navy because you can't do army.

It's not the case of joining the navy just to join the army, that's what I'm trying to get across, I was merely asking was it possible and does it happen?
My main goal is a career with the defence forces regardless of the branch
My aim is to get there and stay there, I understand that the ns are reluctant to let people transfer across and that the skill sets are unique, but I know of a army recruit who originally joined the navy, but I'm not sure of the reasons behind it?
