Strange that it was two Blackjack's instead of the Bear's. Given how few of them they have left flying them just for demonstration seems stupid.

in a way, its not really surprising given the template of their air ops over Syria - effectively that each type is used en masse until it runs out of spares and combat effectiveness, withdraws and is replaced by the next type. it then regenerates, both in technical and training terms, and then returns to ops to replace whether type is now shagged out after 4 months over Syria.

one of the big things we've learnt from watching sustained Russian air/naval combat ops is actually how limited they are - they have a thin crust of operational effectiveness, but it has little depth, and it takes months to regenerate it once its been used.

this is Vlad the Invader trying desperately to prove he can do two things at once, when actually he can't.

        • They did no such thing. They were just escorting Trumps other allies on a tour of Little Britain.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Don't the Air Corps already have a rough estimate of how many aircrew/airframes it requires to keep just the EAS AW139 in Athlone serviceable daily? That's considering they only have 6 AW139's and on top of that the airframe being rotated back to Baldonnel every few days or so and a new airframe replacing the one gone to Baldonnel to take up the EAS duty, she is no jet granted but she is technically at readiness when tasked, the same would go for the IRCG and they are 24/7/365 at just 4 bases with 4 S92's which is one aircraft at each base & a spare in Shannon or Waterford at any given time.

Surely there is some understanding there of what exactly it takes to keep one airframe ready to go.

            • I see mention of radar in the press. Did they have their transponders on or do we have primary radar that can spot them?

              • According to this there are primary radar units in Dublin, Cork and Shannon

Thanks! Do we know what kind of units they are? And does this make our conversation about primary LR radars moot?

No. This has been discussed at length previously.

                        They are civilian IAA radars

Page 4 shows primary radar coverage (ie will detect aircraft even if transponder is off)

Page 8 shows secondary radar coverage (ie aircraft must have transponder turned on)

Ouch, but honest question that I've never thought of, how are step sisters of the Horizon's doing?
