Irish navy involved in search and rescue operation in Mediterranean
As of today, after loading 2 containers of returning equipment from Irish Army unit Lebanon, it looks as if Samuel Beckett's deployment has ended and she will be returning home. I suppose she may have to offload in Cobh or Cork?

    • No reason why she can't offload in Haulbowline. Depends on what is the weight in the box. Another capability demonstrated for future ops. The deck aft can take 3 TEUs of course.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

      • Just a heads up in case, seems Prime Time were on either the Beckett or Niamh for at least a bit, it will be on Tuesday's Prime Time. It's focused on the whole question of the refugee flow but it might have some input from the ship.

How is that achieved? Judging from the photos of the above pick up in Beirut on the other thread, two TEU loaded longitudinally seem to be the limit.

There may be a potential for stacking or for three TEU loaded laterally.

          • Optical Illusion. There are three spots for TEUs on the deck, and power sockets for each if required.

You can just make out the Twistlocks on the deck between the 2 containers.

            • Primetime tonight, on RTE 1 after the 9 O'Clock News, is expected to feature footage of the L.E. SAMUEL BECKETT conducting operations in the Mediterranean. The reporter was aboard the MSF ship during operations for a number of weeks.
Eye opening stuff for all the naysayers.

              • Well done sir.
AFM Officer excels in overseas deployment
An AFM officer has been given an international commendation following his 4-month deployment at the European Military Headquarters in Rome as part of EUNAVFORMED Operation SOPHIA. The Operation Commander presented Maj. James T. Grech with a commendation letter and thanked him for his outstanding professionalism, personal commitment and dedication to duty during his stay in Rome. Rear Admiral Enrico Credendino concluded with a word of thanks for Maj. Grech’s performance “which reflect great credit upon himself, Malta and the European Union”. The AFM is proud to have such dedicated officers who raise Malta’s reputation on international deployments.

                • Not Irish Navy but I thought this article was interesting

It seems that the UK Border Force have withdrawn their Damon Stan Cutters and chartered a ship to conduct migrant rescues.

Perhaps Vos Grace is chartered by a European Agency as I believe they have extra crewing detachments on board, not part of the ships crew, such as a medical team, and an assortment of Police and immigration processors. The charter is initially for 6months with other ships available if required on repayment.

Its chartered by the UK Border Force...working for EU FRONTEX...I believe yes for the reasons you outline above.

The medics etc on board are RN / RM.

They had two cutters operating in the Aegean Sea https://www.gov.uk/government/news/b...cue-operations

Seems to have been a low-key thing as I never heard anything on the news about them actually going out there.

What do ships like Vos Grace get used for normally - oil fields?

The VOS GRACE and her many vessel types work with the OILFIELD Industry. They are classed as ERRV's and MRV'S, the latter an Emergency Response Rescue Vessel and the former a Multi Role Vessel. The MRV's have two Daughter craft capable of 4hr independent deployment and the ERRV's carry 2 FRC's. Both have multi bed hospitals and pullman seats for up to 150 personnel(rescuees) with emergency clothing etc. A family member is captain on one of the VOS vessels.

                        • UK MOD have made an interesting choice in the vessel they have chosen.
Royal Navy Ship RFA Mounts Bay To Help In Migrant Crisis
The Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship RFA Mounts Bay will be acting as a patrol boat and deterrent to people smugglers in the Aegean Sea

The Royal Navy is to send a ship to assist with the migrant crisis in the Aegean Sea.

It comes as Culture Secretary John Whittingdale has warned the Government that migration from the EU has left the UK "creaking at the seams".

RFA Mounts Bay, a landing dock, will join a NATO maritime group recently deployed to the region.

She is currently in Crete, waiting for diplomatic clearance to begin her mission in the waters around Greece and Turkey.

A Wildcat helicopter, from 825 Naval Air Squadron, has flown from Oman to link up with her. A detachment of Royal Marines Commandos will also be on board.

If she doesn't receive diplomatic clearance within 10 days, she will sail into international waters and conduct airborne surveillance using the Wildcat.

The Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship will come under the command of a German ship, the FGS Bonn. The rest of the group is made up of a Canadian, Greek and Turkish ship.

NATO has repeatedly insisted that the ships are not in the Aegean to rescue migrants. Instead they will be tasked with surveillance and reconnaissance.

They are expected to operate around the narrow straits between Turkey and the islands of Lesvos and Samos, where so many thousands of migrants cross.

As of 1 March, 129,455 migrants had arrived in Europe by sea in 2016 according to the International Organisation for Migration. Some 418 have died making the crossing.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

                            • Not taking the piss here but wtf is the point in the "rescue patrols" when nobody wants to take the rescued and border rules are being reintroduced to the ridiculous schengen zone?
Everyone who's ever loved you was wrong.

Exactly. RFA Mounts Bay is a civilian crewed ship with a small military detachment (sometimes) and is unarmed. It is also classified as a Passenger vessel.
Not an armed Naval vessel with a Naval crew.
