Just a guess, but maybe it is to stop thousands of people drowning?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Fair enough I taught you were referring to the fact it's a BFO vessel

Also important to note it is a very different type of op than the NS one

Depends on task. Fitted for two 30mm Bushmasters and a variety of hmg/lmg mounts and a Phalanx CIWS. Flight deck handles up to Chinook size helicopters. It is designed to assist military tasks in most operational environments. The civilian crew can man light weapons where required.

            • Ah but RFA Mounts Bay is on a (non-rescue) NATO mission to take on the smugglers.

VOS Grace, Protector and another cutter are also staying/going out there.

It seems so as the crews on RFA's are trained to man the ships defensive weapons. It's a bit like fire fighting but with bullets. Before joining the RFA the requirement is included in their terms of engagement and service.
Putting all that aside, the next Mediterranean patrols are not going to be rescue or benign, more detain and return. Will we participate??

                • It's a NATO mission focused on addressing the people smugglers

Thought NATO has already said that they will only be passing on info to Greece and Turkey on intercepts not actually stopping any active movements. Besides that's not where we deployed last time, I presume we'd be going back to the Libya area?

Well Greece and Turkey are NATO allies so I assume other NATO countries will go to their assistance (God knows they have enough "assets")

                        • Rescue options

This morning UNHCR spokesperson has indicated that his agency will not be part of those tasked with implementing EU policy decision on returning ALL new migrants to Turkey. What do we do with those migrants/refugees picked up at sea coming from Libyan routes, when that season opens?
Does triple lock apply? It seems that the refugee crisis is developing into a degree of aggression against those with little choice but to leave their homes in a multi aggressive war zone. If UNHCR and MSF withdraw being actors, what should we do?

given that last years mission was helping the Italians, it rather depends on what the Italians decide to do, and then you deciding whether you want to help the Italians/Maltese/Greeks/Whoever do what they've decided to do.

i wouldn't be that surprised if, while there will be a SAR mission this year, that it won't be quite as cuddly as last years.

oh, and to correct you, the new policy/agreement is not to return all new migrants to Turkey, its to return all those who have their asylum claims in the EU rejected to Turkey - assuming they came via Turkey. so in some ways it will be business as usual, with migrants housed, fed and processed when they get to the EU, its just that this time there is a (imv, largely imaginary and completely unworkable..) method of getting rid of those judged not to be eligible for Asylum.

if Ireland thinks this is all a bit grubby and sordid, and believes it is above such, it is of course free to hoover the Med of migrants and take them back to Ireland...

                            • The NS mission in the Med is a humanitarian mission so Triple Lock doesn't apply.

The NS mission is really to rescue distressed Mariners (they happen to be people who are refugees).

IMHO there is no single solution,
allow people to apply before they leave their country (to an EU central applications system) - this may already be allowed not sure

you need to have a list of countries that you say ok yes there is a civil war going on in Syria, you have fairly good grounds, give us more details

you need to have another list of countries that you say ok there is known human rights abuses etc, tell us more

then you have countries where you say what abuses are you suffering and investigate it

then you have countries where you say you aren't a refugee, you are an economic migrants, unless you prove otherwise

As I understand it, migrants who arrived before 20/03/2016, have full access to the Greek asylum agencies. Those that arrived since then, ongoing, are segregated to await a promised pan EU processing agency. In so processing, every migrant/refugee returned to Turkey, will be matched by a Syrian already in Turkey, who can be shipped, I presume by air, to those countries that have volunteered refuge , such as Ireland 4000. In the overall it appears an effort to return most "Irregular " refugees to Turkey and control the regular quotas from the transportable cohorts. The term " irregular" gives quite a negative outlook to those in that classification.
