Also important to note it is a very different type of op than the NS one

Putting all that aside, the next Mediterranean patrols are not going to be rescue or benign, more detain and return. Will we participate??

Rescue options

Does triple lock apply? It seems that the refugee crisis is developing into a degree of aggression against those with little choice but to leave their homes in a multi aggressive war zone. If UNHCR and MSF withdraw being actors, what should we do?Last edited by ancientmariner; 25 March 2016, 14:29.

i wouldn't be that surprised if, while there will be a SAR mission this year, that it won't be quite as cuddly as last years.
oh, and to correct you, the new policy/agreement is not to return all new migrants to Turkey, its to return all those who have their asylum claims in the EU rejected to Turkey - assuming they came via Turkey. so in some ways it will be business as usual, with migrants housed, fed and processed when they get to the EU, its just that this time there is a (imv, largely imaginary and completely unworkable..) method of getting rid of those judged not to be eligible for Asylum.
if Ireland thinks this is all a bit grubby and sordid, and believes it is above such, it is of course free to hoover the Med of migrants and take them back to Ireland...

The NS mission in the Med is a humanitarian mission so Triple Lock doesn't apply.
The NS mission is really to rescue distressed Mariners (they happen to be people who are refugees).
IMHO there is no single solution,
allow people to apply before they leave their country (to an EU central applications system) - this may already be allowed not sure
you need to have a list of countries that you say ok yes there is a civil war going on in Syria, you have fairly good grounds, give us more details
you need to have another list of countries that you say ok there is known human rights abuses etc, tell us more
then you have countries where you say what abuses are you suffering and investigate it
then you have countries where you say you aren't a refugee, you are an economic migrants, unless you prove otherwiseLast edited by DeV; 23 March 2016, 11:41.

REFUGEE/MIGRANT Processing
