  • 2016 Commemorative Medal

Fine Gael published their manifesto today.

In section 7 they state they will award all members of the Permanent Defence Forces in service in 2016 a Commemorative Medal.

They also commit to going from a 8 to a 9 ship fleet.

Now that is going to cause some sh1t with the RDF if that line is not a typo.

    A word of extreme caution!
They promised in the 2011 manifesto to award a General Michael Collins medal in commemoration of the founding of the volunteers in 2013.

But that never happened as we all know.

Many of those points listed under defence are relight infrot of the DoD at the moment yet they are repeatedly saying no to them. Kings will come an go, but the servants stay the same

Single Force Concept strikes again lads. The Cultaca flash is obviously the distinguishing feature of being a reservist in 2016.
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Well in fairness 1916 was fought between a full-time paid force and a bunch of unpaid amateurs who picked it up as best they could after work and on weekends.

Oh wait, which side are we commemorating again?

I think you're right. It'll never happen anyway. It was put into the manifesto to appease someone and will be killed off quietly after the election.

Why would you want to wear such a medal. You happen to be in the DF on the right year. you dont have to do anything to achieve this award.

When you add up the numbers who claimed to be out in 1916, there's likely enough spare medals to outfit the DF. And at least today's lads can prove they're in the uniform!

Ummh, Free medals for some, Cultaca Flashes for others.
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

FICTION - Before you go shooting your mouth off with this sort of ignorant comment, go and look up the pension records in Army Archives. See how hard it was to actually get a military service pension and how rigorously each claim was vetted. My uncle served in WW1, The War of Independence and the Civil War, when he was killed in action in 1922 while serving with the National Army, his widow and two infant children were left destitute and on the verge of eviction until a local politician intervened and got them a pittance from the State. You probably heard these kind of stupid comments about the numbers who "allegedly" claimed to be in the GPO etc in 1916 at the bar late at night and never bothered to find out for yourself whether they were actually true or not.

Centurion, he is talking about the number of people who claimed to be in the GPO. Pensions are a very different thing.

Just thinking, why don't they award this medal, only to pers who are on the parade, or on duty on day.
