        How "historic" is the FMC in its current format-10-15 years? Whether it is sent to SFPA or is manned by civvies still allows trained NS bods to crew/naval duties.

          FMC has been in place in Haulbowline since the 80s. It is vital that NS retain FMC as without it there is no way to monitor in real time, hundreds of small vessels entering and leaving the state, many of whom in the past have been used to smuggle weapons, drugs and people.
          Historic=something in the past.
          SFPA need to start doing their own job properly before you start taking tasks from other agencies. Sort out the wexford gangsters for starters.
          For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

            I think you are confusing FMC with RMP, FMC only monitors a small cohort of traffic. In my experience most fishermen are cut from the same stick . There was an incident involving one of the Wexford trawlers with the NS and the NS withdrew when confronted by the trawlermen concerned. If the NS cant handle the punters how then can the SFPA be expected to face them down with nothing bigger than a rib armed with biros.

              That isn't their total remit. If SFPA regulated the markets, the end users better, there should be no illegal fish landings whatsoever. Leave the boarding to the NS. There are too many navies on this small isle.

                That is probably the best tactic giving the best outcome. As somebody posted here before, Mrs Murphy wants to buy her fish in a very presentable fresh & hygenic fashion from a reputable shop/monger, not from a hoodie behind the jacks in the car park. Intercepting the fish coming into and moving about the internal market is the best means of enforcement. Whilst uncaught the fish are the property of the EEC and let it chase the trawlers. If the trawlers cannot land/sell the illegal catch they will go out of business. There is ample space for the SFPA to deal with landbased matters leaving matters maritime to the INS.

                      The SFPA was founded most likely to tidy up the legal paths between Naval actions at sea, Gardai ,and the courts. The Navy work for the SFPA but do NOT arrest vessels but detain them on suspicion of a contravention. On advice of the DPP based on Naval Statements, the Gardai Arrest the Skipper of the detained vessel and he has his day in court. All vessels at sea above a minimal length 12/15m have a classification satellite transponder, any monitoring agency picks up ALL transmissions so that it knows Tankers, Liners, general cargo, trawlers, yachts, Military vessels from each other by colour and obviously motion. The FMC picture is as near Real Maritime Picture as it is possible to obtain other than vessels Switched off like ours or theirs?

                        The RMP exists and has done for a number of years there is a lot more to it than the FV transponders and AIS

                          It exists for those with info from the Mil. satellites and the known undersea picture, perhaps FMC and RMP doesn't exactly describe Haulbowline's Centre, which might be bettered described as a Known Surface Picture Centre and Not just exclusively a Fishery Monitoring capable Centre.

                            Those interested could look up Command and Control-The Recognised Maritime Picture- it gives a good overview.
