Would there be anything to be said for getting an additional one or two of these airframes so the ISTAR variant can be kept specifically for that role?
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.

Well we now have one. The whole point is that they are multi role. On the Spectres, the pod with the vision equipment retracts into the fuselage so it doesn’t effect performance.

      • Ah but can it tow the drogue?
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

No but PC9’s can (probably not ours but they exist)

To be clear we have fours aircraft, 3 of which are ISTAR Specter versions and a single utility PC12NG, a second or third utility would be nice but I can't see it until the need can be proven.

                No but the Learjet can!
                https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/GFD_Ge...ieldarstellung
GFD is a subsidiary of Airbus and operates a dozen Learjet35's as target aircraft with drogues under the wing (remember the Learjet was based on a design for a Swiss jet fighter!).
Seeing that all ministers will from now on be shamed into not flying MATS we can re-configure the L35 for MedEvac and target tug. At least it will give the artillery boys something closer to the speed of a modern attacker than the Cessna did.

Do they still fire the Bofors or have they been retired? If that is not too invasive a question.

Retired so the drogue would be for HMG/GPMG (on AA) mount and NS

                    • Not quite; the wings of the Learjet were fitted to a prototype fighter for the Swiss AF, but it was not a success. The Mystere fighter of the French AF used the same wings as the Dassault Falcon business jet and this was later fitted to the Etendard marine fighter.

                      • Well now that Pilatus have started to make Bizjets, maybe they might like to expand into Jet Trainers
It was the year of fire...the year of destruction...the year we took back what was ours.
It was the year of rebirth...the year of great sadness...the year of pain...and the year of joy.
It was a new age...It was the end of history.
It was the year everything changed.

                        • I note that Finland has been using the Spectre for a while. They also use the C295 in the transport and SIGINT roles.
Any chance of an exchange I wonder?

As far as I know the PC-12's in Finnish service are just utility models and not the Spectre ISTAR variant.

                            • Finland used to have a bunch of Piper Navajos as liaison/utility aircraft. I'd say they were quite happy to get PC-12s and fly above the weather, instead of through it.

Can't see that happening, not only is the market full at the moment the PC-21 is marketed as eliminating the need for a jet powered trainer. It is why the Swiss. Spanish and French have replaced the Hawks, C101s and Alpha-jets with PC-21 respectively.
