  • Irish army:not in enough wars...

For those of you not on Twitter, this persons recent observations on the Irish Defence Forces have caused quite a stir. Great to see the general public leaping to the defence of the Defence Forces...

Some of the responses have been epic.

For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

One might suggest that we are used as directed by the Government, and it is to them and the Minister for Defence/Taoiseach ( save a tweet ! they are the same person ) that the sentiment should be directed.
"Are they trying to shoot down the other drone? "

"No, they're trying to fly the tank"

i would have thought that mary kenny would favour them taking part in peacekeeping, say for example Ugandan discussions.

Just going to be devils advocate for a second but she does have a point, but before any of ye get up on your high horse hear me out.

One of the reasons the vast majority of the Irish people think that the DF is:

1/ A Force solely of peacekeepers.(They would pass out if they knew the real definition of the role of Infantry for example)
2/ "Only a Defence Force". Not realising that the "Defence Force" is comprised of three branches the largest of which is the "Army".And an "Army" does what?????
            3/ A waste of money/joke.Take your pick.

Is because we DON'T fight wars or have had to drive out invaders(recently) like some other nations and over the last thirty odd years the times we have gone " kinetic" can be counted on one hand.

Other nations have great pride in their Militaries because they see that the Military will fight to protect them and lay down their lives in many cases in doing so. Unfortunately in the eyes of many we can't say the same. Yes I agree that sentiment by the Irish people is wrong but that's the way it is.

I believe Ms.Kenny was just expressing that viewpoint seeing as she is just another person who despite her education and standing is representative of the vast majority of the Irish people in that she hasn't a clue about what we do or why we are needed.

            Sad but true.

"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

Armies have to be blooded every generation in order for the Taxpayer to be reminded what they are there for.

As the weasels in the Department of Finance find it cheaper to hide behind Britian's skirt, people start thinking about the need to pay for one.

Air defence being the latest example. Remember also, the Irish people have never experienced a real war.
It has being brain washed out of the Irish that we fought the likes of WW1, Crimean, and Boer war

That said, in another thread we discussed the state of the German military forces. This is a nation used to war, and more importantly used to being occupied by an enemy force, who impacted on their daily lives.
The only nations who have citizens supporting strong militaries these days are quasi dictatorships, fuelled on jingoism.
I'm happy not to be in that club.

                      Sounds like a born leader

How about a direct entrant commission with an immediate posting to the middle east on peace keeping duties??

You're in danger of sounding just like her, you do realise. As well, all three of your examples here were in pursuit of the interests of the British Empire, not for anything worthy that the public (rightfully) would back Irish lives being sacrificed for. The Crimean War was largely ignored, but both the Second Boer War and WWI were actively opposed by a large part of the population.

Perhaps it's time to dust off the old plan for the invasion and occupation of Iceland?!
