The ballistic helmet market has come a long way over the last few years.
The US Army is moving towards a modular scalable helmet. A basic helmet can weigh little more than 0.5kg and still offer level IIIA protection. Those who need it, such as APC crewmen or ESSC, can add addition ballistic face and eye protection, communications headset, neck protection, and even a level III plate on top.

Kiwis are looking at something similar.
Yeah Revision helmets are very popular in the regular military....probably a good choice here too.

British Army Aircrew wearing something similar lately.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

Our own Air Corps Heli crewmen have those too.
"Let us be clear about three facts. First, all battles and all wars are won in the end by the infantryman. Secondly, the infantryman always bears the brunt. His casualties are heavier, he suffers greater extremes of discomfort and fatigue than the other arms. Thirdly, the art of the infantryman is less stereotyped and far harder to acquire in modern war than that of any other arm." ------- Field Marshall Wavell, April 1945.

We're approaching Q2 of 2021. Any more on the procurement process as outlined in the Irish Times article?

What article are you referring to?? Procurement process kicked off a couple of weeks ago with the publication of a Prior Information Notice(PIN) by the DoD. Looking for information on whats on offer from prospective suppliers. A tender should be in place later this year with first deliveries projected(hopefully) for June 2022.

I had mistaken the PIN as a newspaper clipping. My mistake.

Slight deviation but connected. General service helmet replacement board now convened. Let the speculation begin

What improvements are needed to the current helmet? Is it mainly about mounting points for NVE or can you get a lighter helmet with the same ballistic protection these days?

They have to be replaced no matter what, Rabintex who manufactured them are gone.

Kevlar degrades over time. Even items that are held in strategic reserve stock that have never left the stores degrade. So the helmets and body armour need replacing. Could you imagine the shit storm that would happen if a DF member was found to have died because their PPE was out of date?? DF helmets used to just have to meet the US NIJ Standard. They now have to meet that standard and exceed it by meeting the newer, higher EU Standards(Sorry the name escapes me)

Also the occasion to replace offers a chance to modernise. Lighter weight UHMWPE construction Four point harness, improved interior padding(Hopefully) better integration with COMMS systems and integrated NVG mount. Perhaps accessory rails for lights etc.

                                VAPM? PM1 to 11?
I suppose, given the push towards working from armoured vehicles, and the move in the last decade towards almost everyone carrying comms, instead of just the minority, the push towards integrated helmet & comms is the logical step? Wearing of protective eyewear has almost become standard also since the introduction of the RBH303. I'm gone 10 years in November, but back then even having a helmet you could wear peltors under was a novelty.(even if the 1980s pattern British Mk6 helmet already had this built in).
Having modular, one helmet for all would also be a huge advantage, from the Quartermasters perspective. No different helmets for the secret squirrels, armoured crews, naval armed boarding parties etc.
One of the huge flaws with the Mk 6 though (and I wonder was it the same with our most recent helmet?) was when the wearer was prone, the rear rim would be pushed forward by the wearers body armour collar, causing the front brim to obscure vision somewhat.
I know many motorcycle helmet manufacturers also make ballistic helmets (Schuberth for example), and they recommend a working life of about 7 years before UV starts to degrade it.
