Royal Canadian Navy and Coast Guard Shipbuilding Programme

The Canadians are in the middle of a number of new projects with the Type 26 and the AOPV of particular interest.

    https://www.pbo-dpb.gc.ca/web/defaul...ing/CSC_EN.pdf

The above is a great read from the Canadian Parliament pertaining to warship costings.

Page 19-20 delves into the cost comparison of the AB versus the Hobart Class and concludes "So, using the estimated ninth ship marginal cost, Australia will pay $3.23 billion AUS, or 54 per cent, more for ships two-thirds the size." (They could add with a lot less capability and survivability but probably did not want to be too rude about it being polite Canadians afterall.)

A lot less capability? Not really, but fewer VLS cell sure.

But on a total cost the government basis (net of tax receipts ), the local build of a small class of only three ships would still be less expensive than procuring Arleigh Burkes FMS. A lot of the program expenditure on the Hobarts was on infrastructure that will also be used for other builds.

To bridge the AOPS programme to the RCN Type 26 (In the same vein of the River B2 to the RN Type 26) the Canadians are going to spend $1.5B to build two more AOPS's.

The insanity of government provided corporate welfare in the naval shipbuilding sector.

To be fair, the Canadians always envisaged that 6 to 8 ships would be procured as announced back in 2007. The recently announced additional two take the program total to 8. A lot of factors would have played a part in the decision; performance of the program to date including cost management, ongoing reassessment since 2007 of the economic lifespan of the Coast Guards existing fleet, and workforce issues.

    German 2: Private? I am a general!
German 1: That is the bad news.
