When I joined the NS, ratings wore an appalling orange/brown jacket and pants with brass buttons reminiscent of the Curragh. The blue shirt and pants were always very civilian and difficult to look smart and collapsed when washed. The DPM comes in a more functional package and will be ours AND will also be Service wise Fashionable. Naval personnel should not have to wear green DPM's except for a clear tactical reason.
With the greatest of respect, your comment sounds exactly what some Senior Officer (who's either away with the fairies, or is cementing their pet project for promotion) would say at a good old "working group".

Just call it what it is. A vanity pet project. There is/was no operational need for it. It's as simple as that.

I'm sure whoever had the lightbulb moment a few years ago, probably never envisaged ships being tied up due to lack of crew.

Still. It'll sound mightily impressive to the civvie at interview.

No one is saying that the NS SHOULD wear "Army" DPM just that the new uniform, with it's NS centric features(which was badly need) could have been produced in a traditional Navy Uniform colour.Like, Navy. Funny how the USN ditched their "Blueberries" and are going back to plain Navy and how the RN never seemed to need to change to a bespoke pattern. I wonder why that is? Less insecure maybe??

(It's DF DPM BTW and funny how the Air Corps have no problem wearing it when the need arises.)
I've said it before but I don't see why we couldn't have bought the RN working dress less white ensign. Would have received their economy of scale too. God knows, we could even have added a tricolour for some differentiation on the shoulder.

Then again, I'm assuming that Tailored Image have a 100 year contract on all non DPM clothing.....

      • If it was in navy colour but the same material and cut none here would be saying anything but about time.

Now that the NS have their own variant, how long will it be until the AC come looking for their own?

And on the Royal Navy working dress, this from 2015 is worth a read, https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-10122027.html

Unless they've had an update since?

          • So, as an observer reading this post it's clear from the wider DF viewpoint this sits somewhere between Bertie Ahern's canary yellow G8 monstrosity and that orange away jersey Vs Macedonia in the pantheon of Irish clothing missteps.

Personally, I think this will market very well with the public. Recognisability and branding are hugely important with major acquisition programs on the horizon and I'm sure the DPM is much better at hiding coffee stains in a Force 9.

More likely to think army in urban camo with this new rig IMHO

So many organisations wear the same thing. Customs, Coast Guard, Firemen, Some Pharma workers... Binmen.. it's too generic.
For now, everything hangs on implementation of the CoDF report.

As someone who will be wearing the new uniform, i couldnt care less if its grey, blue, orange or pink, as long as its comfortable to wear and you can easily layer up/down.

Current GDR is horrible to wear in the summer months as its does not breath at all and you are not permitted to layer down.

It also looks like a bag of rags once creased and fades rapidly after a few washes.

My only issue with the new uniform is the new grey rank sliders and nametags, the black one should remain IMO.

Also the removal of the barrack jacket is a mistake and the jumper is a 1980s piece of uniform and looks ridiculous with the new kit.

Other than that, its the first time in the service history that significant investment has been made in a working uniform so it has to be welcomed.

Tailored Image a very good outfit to deal with, I use them for work wear and had been talking to them re the Navy stuff earlier in the year when I was setting them up as a supplier. The managaeed to source and supply stuff for my guys at very short notice in the arly days of lock down and had it all to me in a very acceptable space of tie given the circumstances.

I hope the NS find them as good to deal with as I did.

I had replied to the "missing the point comment". I don't know what happened to it. However all the subsequent back and forth is interesting on mind sets and keeping people in their places. The change is here but before final introduction, it should be trialled in all modes-- operational, office dress, working dress, and make sure the bits stay apt to mode in question.

It was trialed last year in various roles. P62, College, Dockyard, Ops etc etc.

                            • So how does a major new uniform usually get rolled out? Do personnel receive them en masse as stock arrives and as quickly as stores can facilitate or will they slowly replace the existing uniform by being issued to recruits and cadets plus where GDR has worn out and needs replacing?

With the issue of GDR in 2014, everyone was issued the kit by unit.

Once Logs had certified everybody had received the issue, a date was set for the whole Navy to wear. it

The same system should follow suit this time i would imagine.
